I started at Roadmaster Truck Driving School in San Antonio, TX this past Monday. So far the experience has been good. I've started a blog http://trucker-girl.blogspot.com/ to chronicle my experience through school and beyond. I'll try to update daily. I opted to do it this way so that it would be visible across the net rather than just through the forum. The paragraphs pertinent to school and not just musings are in blue. The best way to read the blog is to select from the list on the right hand side, from the bottom up. Unfortunately blogs like to order things from most recent to oldest.

    Scarlet Termite Thanks this.

I have to apologize for the lack of updates. I've found I'm just too wiped at the end of the day and come the weekend I've been distracted after being gone all week. I'm staying with my folks in San Antonio the driving back to Austin Thurs eve. I will write up a summary of school after I graduate Thurs :)

Congratulations on your graduation! I read your blog and it both encouraged me and scared the crap out of me. I start my adventure with Roadmaster on Monday. I've already passed the General Knowledge and the Combinations parts of the permit test but for some reason the air brakes are kicking my ###.

I should also tell you that, while not being a biker, I am also 50+ and starting a new career after spending 30 years in the health care field.

I did it! Despite my drive instructor's yelling (he yelled at everyone) and my yard instructor making me feel like a ding bat I passed my driving test with an 89 and graduated with a 97.5 GPA! Do I feel ready to hit the road? Hell no! But I guess that's why only certain companies take recent students and have their own training program.

I have mixed opinions about the school. Ultimately I have my CDL and now have employment options and pay opportunities I didn't have 4 weeks ago which is what truly matters.

Truckergirl, thank you for posting youre experiences. I too am a 50+ lady who has been in med field all my life and looking for a huge lifestyle change. i am seriously considering Roadmaster rather going thru a company school. Please tell me.. have you found that companies will hire you right out of school? My fear is that they all want a year experience. Truly appreciate your input.

Oh and Impact... Semper Fi! I r 1 2. smiles

Catheryn, I would recommend finding a company that will hire a recent grad BEFORE you pay thousands for a CDL. I dont want to discourage anyone but insurance companies are getting very tough on companies about the number of new drivers they have. Good luck, be safe.
