Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and wish I had found it sooner. I just finished getting my class 1 here in BC. I have had 5 speeding tickets in the last 5 years. I guess my question is am I screwed for finding a job in the oil patch with this kind of a drivers abstract and no experience? I was led to believe I had a job waiting if I could get my class 1. To make a long story short that wasn't true. I am hoping to find a camp job or at least a job I can come home for 5 or 6 days once a month. I have sent off some resumes but have had no reply. I was thinking of heading out to Alberta to hand out resumes in person. If anyone has a suggestion I would be most grateful!
Good luck to everyone out there -
Wow, 5 speeding tickets in 5 years. You might get work with a small outfit that doesn't check abstracts..? I think your ####ed.
Big wheel72 Thanks this. -
One a year not good but not horrible. Big thing is apply in person resumes are for fancy office positions.they almost never get you a field position. Feet on the floor in the manager's office is a hundred times more effective but bring the res along for him to check out while you are there.
Canadian-ay and Big wheel72 Thank this. -
You guys out in Alberta starting to get some drier weather? Hope things are starting to pick up. Hasn't been too bad down here in Regina lately anyway as far as rain goes. Looking forward to heading out to Alberta this weekend.

I'm in mud near Lloyd, but been pretty dry till the last few days

Yup hit and miss around Lloyd. One lease is flooded and the next seems to be dry enough that you don't need to chain up.

Not horrible ??? The most points I've heard that was acceptable is 6, (most companies are 3 demerit points) 5 speeding tickets is probably 15 demerit points. Not a hope in Hell to get hired on with any reputable company. I believe a driver's abstract/driving record becomes part of the companies profile in thier National Safety Code Program. Prairie Boy could probably answer this.
Your advice that a Resume "almost never gets you a field position" is just plain bad advice.
A very nicely laid out Resume including relative experience, references from past employers, a clean driver's abstract and coloured photocopies of all your oilfield tickets will get you a phone call for an interview. None of the managers I know would drop what they are doing to interview a cold call drop in type guy, and no good receptionist would bother a manager to do so.
"Feet on the floor in the manager's office" doesn't happen anywhere I've worked (unless you've worked for the guy before and are on good terms) especially with 5 speeding tickets on the Resume.
Not to pick on the OP, but 5 speeding tickets in 5 years is bad judgement, someone I would not consider hiring regardless of previous experience, especially in today's Oil Patch.Big wheel72 Thanks this. -
don't know where you work, but in 25 years I have gotten maybe 1 call on a resume and no jobs. I have gotten many good jobs by showing up with a resume sometimes I had to come back afterwards for an interview, but in most cases I had an interview within the hour. as far as the tickets go,he can't undo the past, so it is what it is. all he can do is ask and see what they say. it would be good to have a basic explanation as to why his driving habits are going to show a serious improvement
Big wheel72 and Desolation Roe Thank this. -
Thanks Pinner. Not what I wanted to hear at all but I guess it is what it is. I will get out there and take what I can get for a couple of years until its cleaned up. I guess there is no point switching my license to an Albertan license to clean up the abstract? I assume the BC points would be on it?
