Question for you Big Rigg. Im thinking of CRS and beginning with them by going through their school and becoming an employee. I read your blog about the schooling and some of your training. After a year would you still recommend them to start with?

Wow I haven't even looked at this thread for a long time. Glad PSUMoose posted more of his experiences and answered questions. Great to see it still alive.

Yes after a year with Central I would still recommend them as a starter company. I started with Central on June 27th of last year. Started as a Lease driver on April 28 this year. So was a company driver for about 9 months before leasing. In that nine months I made $15,000 which I don't think is bad for a new driver. It beats the unemployment I was on. Others may tell you that the pay is low but remember your have no experience, you are changing careers, and you are asking them to train you at a discount price So I think for a first year it was not bad. As I learned what I was doing I learned how to make more money and my paychecks reflect that. Each month they kept going up and more miles were run. If you do deiced to go with Central my only advice would be this. Finish out the entire first year so you finish your contract with them for the schooling. Not only will it save you money but it will look better on your record if you try to apply to another company. Also do not even think about leasing with them until your first year is completed. It will take you a year to learn how the company runs and how there customers run. Your first contract with them will be up in a year so use the whole year to learn. If you add another contract onto that year by leasing then you are stuck with them for 2-3 years or more or worst end up leaving and owing them lots of money. I plan on being with Central for 3-5 years so I can save up and buy my own truck and have more experience under my belt when I go to apply with another company.

Nothing like that at all. You go out with your trainer for a certain amount of driving time ( I forget how much but maybe psumoose can help me out) then you come back an upgrade. The upgrade you take a driving test and watch some videos if you pass the test your good to go. If you fail they look at what you need more work on and send you out with a different trainer.

Yes bigrigg is right you go out run atleast 200 driving hours over 28+ days and do a minimum of 40 backups. There is a workbook to do as well. After you finish all this you go to a terminal and take some tests. Road test as long as you dont hit anything or speed you pass. Watch a coupple videos then take 2 tests. My student who upgraded today failed his trip planning test, but all they made him do was retake it with me helping him and they upgraded him. Sometimes they also ask you to show you can put on chains and do a full pretrip on the refer. Hope that helps. I've heard of trainees testing for upgrading 2-3 times and not being sent home.

Thanks a million. More than likely i will go with them. I'm very new and a novice to the industry. I was also thinking of Swift as well. What would do you have to say about Swift transporation?

People joke around that swift stands for sure wish id finished training, but they are a starter company just like central. Central does pay more and from my experance seems to care about the driver. I have heard some not so great things about swift, but I have also heard the same about central. Central only runs reefers (limited flat and dry van), if you think you would prefer flat bed I have heard decent things about swifts training.
I know central and swift are related (owned by the same family) but they are two diffrent beasts. Hope that helped. Keep asking questions. Maybe I'll see you around.
