I am wanting to get a 1998-2002 freightliner classic xl fld132 and have been told that they are heavy. Any other flat bedders run this truck. I would like to know the empty weight. I haul a combo 48x102 that weighs about 12k currently in a 2005 w9. My empty weight is about 32k. Once I pick up a 47.5k load I have to watch my fuel. Will the xl be lighter, heaver, or about the same. If you have an exact weight please include the options and fuel too please. Sorry is spelling or grammer is a little off but smart phones are only as smart as the user.

go weigh the tractor then add all your tie down equipment and the trailer weight together,or just go hook up to the trailer and weigh it

Most of the FLD 132 are the skyscraper sleeper - not very desirable for flatbedding. If you can find a flat top in good shape, a real flat top, with rivited aluminum roof, not one of those ugly plastic mid-roof ones you'll be very lucky.
I don't understand why everyone is running around with those tall sleepers pulling a flatbed with fuel prices what they are.
Your trailer is heavy also.
I have CAT powered FLD120 with 64" stand up sleeper and combo and can load 49K and some change.
A flat top Pete would be a good light choice.jeep383s Thanks this. -
I would prefer the big sleeper with a bunk. My kids like to travel with me and there getting a little old to share the bed. Also if I could hook to my trailer and weigh it I would but I don't think I would be able to do that until I bought it. Also to semi crazy which trailer do you pull and what do you have for equipment. 49k is not bad for a load. Most of our loads are about 44k or less although I do see a heavy one once in a while

That classic xl is a good choice, got a friend with a 98 he bought new. high rise condo. 500 detroit, been inframed 1 time. still has original tranny, rear ends. gets 7.0 to 7.3 pulling flat.
Easiest truck on market to work on. entire engine sitting ou in front of the firewall. Unlike the crap they build today. U cant even see the engine. Lol... -
I had a FLD 120, weighed about the same 30,500 empty. I do like how the engine sits on the classic though. U can get to Everything.jeep383s Thanks this. -
W9 is heavier then a classic
jeep383s, SHC and whoopNride Thank this. -
Money wise the classic with a Detroit is a good choice cheaper then a Pete or kw Detroit gets good mpg just make sure its a ddec3 or 4 downside is freightliner quality isn't as good as Pete or kw
whoopNride and jeep383s Thank this.
