Truckers and maritime workers soon will be allowed to extend their expiring Transportation Worker Identification Credential cards by three years at a reduced price because federal officials are facing delays in deploying biometric card readers.
Amid growing pressure from Congress, the Transportation Security Administration announced that beginning Aug. 30, it will allow a three-year extension to TWIC holders whose five-year cards expire on or before Dec. 31, 2014.
TSA will charge $60 for the new biometric credentials, less than half of the normal $129.75 TWIC enrollment fee.
The extension process calls for only one trip, rather than two, to a TWIC enrollment center, and also extends the expiration date of a cardholders security threat assessment background check by three years.

Been to all kinds of fancy ports but never have seen a reader yet. Just another way for someone to make money off the working man.
Union Pacific is the only one close with finger print readers that have big issues !!Kansas Thanks this. -
good report, thank you. i do have a "TWIC card", but i do not think that i will renew it or extend it.
i do not haul for anyone that needs to go into a seaport area, airport, etc.etc.
i think that i wasted my money for something that takes up space in my wallet. it DOES NOT necessarily make one more employable. i been finding that out. -
Here's the information link you need. Remember this starts in August. Unfortunately mine was already going to expire so I had to renew it early.

I actually had to get my TWIC for a non-trucking contract job that I had in a port in New York. I think I'll take advantage of the extension.

Evidently you haven't been in any of the chemical plants or refineries. BASF, Rubicon, IMTT,Dow and a host of others both require and check em at security. Saw a van hauler get mouthy about being "escorted" in last week at IMTT and they just sent him away.
