I need to purchase a new laptop. Can someone knowledgeable in computers recommend what would be a good fit? I want to surf the web, watch DVDs, use google maps and earth. I don't use the laptop for games. How much hard drive and RAM would I need?
I went to Bestbuy and looked around and it is confusing with all the options/ prices.
TIA

I just got me the Dell 15" XPS and love it. Found a discount coupon on the net and they had a 300.00 savings at the web site. About 800.00 dollars and it is loaded to the gills. When you get a laptop in my opinion you might as well get as much as you can in it for what you can afford. Never need to worry about upgrading that way. All depends on what is in your budget. lol @ apple. Anyway, go to newegg.com, stay away from rip offs like best buy. I just got a lenovo ideapad Z575, that had 6GB ram, 350GB hard drive, 15" screen, dvd player/burner, quad core processor and dual graphics cards (one of which is a radeon 6650) for $499.00

House Brand - if they have one - or H.P. if not.

One that works.

I have an iPad and I can everything you mentioned except watch DVDs. But its wonderful. I'm amazed At how much I can do with this thing. I no longer have to go In The truck stop to trans flow or fax I can sign all my load confirmation on the pad without printing them out. And it has so many other things I use it for I think it's great. I bought mine refurbished from apple and it comes with the same warranty As a new one would. -
I have a 15" Lenovo that I used while I was OTR and it was great, a little large if you were sitting in the front. I switched to a smaller Lenovo that is 11" and that worked better for me. Easier to move around in small quarters. -
For desktops and "real work", I'm a PC (Windows 7) man to the bone. But for if you're looking for a durable, snappy, long battery life compact notebook for travel use, and if you have the the means, get a Macbook pro. They will wake from sleep, connect to available wifi, and be running full speed in a fraction of the time a PC will (especially a mobile PC) that has lot's of software, Anti virus, plugins, and other crap that makes it's way routinely to PC's will, plus they'll run twice as long as most PC's on a charge.
I used to be anti Mac but not anymore, but I do prefer PC's for desktop home/business use ... even for my Photoshop and Lightroom machine I prefer to run Windows becuase I can't afford a high-power desktop Mac. -
I like the HP's
As far as the ram goes all of my computers are maxed out with as much memory as the board can handle.
If you want to use it while the truck is moving the tough books are good but so is a lap top with a solid state drive.
I would get the best most powerful computer you can afford. There is a very linear curve of performance and cost until you get to a point where the cost goes up dramatically for a little additional performance. I would buy the last computer on the linear curve If you can afford it.
