I won't be driving thru CA anytime soon but I'm curious: What should you do when you encounter this? Slow down to avoid hitting the car in front of you and hope the guy behind you does the same? Or pull onto the shoulder if there's not a ditch? Use the horn like on a boat?

The best thing to do about driving in Central Valley fog is simple, DON'T! However, if you simply MUST travel in the fog, drive no faster than you can SEE to react! Use your low beam headlights. Try NOT to pull over, and if you must, pull as far off the road as you can, and turn OFF your lights. (Turn off your lights so no-one will try to follow you, and end up hitting you.) Personally, when the fog gets too bad around here, and I must go somewhere, I move at NO MORE than 30 mph. Yeah, I move like Granny, but I have NO accidents, and NO tickets!
