Just asking cause here's the dealio. Sign up for company sponsored training. Go to training and I'm now unemployed for 3 weeks while going through school. I'm not earning a dime. I pass the test the first try. I'm ready to go to work. I assume there will be a one week wait to go to orientation with the mega carrier and guess what. I'm told that I'm sitting home two and a half weeks with no job and no pay. Then I get a call to go and get my bus ticket. I live 5 hours from the destination. I am given a ticket for a 20 hour bus ride with two layovers. The option is available for a 10 hour bus ride for the same price but I assume that they don't want to pay for the extra night at the hotel. They would rather have me sitting at a greyhound station for hours waiting for a bus. Meanwhile, I find a company that is 25 miles from my house and hires recent grads. It's been around for 32 years and has about 50 trucks. Pay is better per mile and they pay training pay. Mileage pay is like 8 cents a mile higher to start. I'm wanting opinions on dumping mega carrier and making a payment arrangement with drivers solutions. I can afford a decent payment and am not worried about credit damage. I have some already. what would you do? Go with mega carrier that doesn't give a flying crap if I'm sitting on my rear starving. They will pay less and I will be just a number to them. Or go with the smaller company close to home that pays a little better and will know me as a driver. Has anyone else dumped the solutions and had to deal with them?
has anyone duped drivers solutions?

I'd go with the smaller carrier. It's simple. These huge companies offer drivers the world and you end up with crap. Cut your losses and go with the smaller guy. You'll be thankful in the end.

Your credit won't be trashed unless you don't make the payments on the loan. This is a question you really need to answer yourself by weighing the options of both companies, this smaller company might pay more but do they have good health insurance like the bigger company would or is it gonna cost you a small fortune to get the health insurance. How long does the smaller company keep you away from home. Weigh it all out then make the decision based on your findings, don't let somebody else make a career decision for you.

I had a friend that had to get on the payment plan with DS (I completed my year so was off the hook with them). I believe his payments were around 100.00 a month (this was when DS was charging $4000, I think it is around $6000 now). The only advice I can give you on this part is if you decide to go with the smaller carrier is to contact DS as soon as possible, because I beieve that they turn over their debts to a collection agency at some point, and that is never good.
The small carrier is usually better in most cases, but don't forget, that if things don't work out with them, you are still obligated to repay DS and have to hustle your next job ASAP.
Best of luck to yourdtaylor74 Thanks this. -
maybe things have changed but if you don't go with the program you don't have any proof that you completed the training program, no certificate of completion or diploma so will the smaller carrier take you with out that even if you make the payment arrangment? other option would see if you bank or credit union will loan you the money for the school cost. but if you can i would go with the smaller company be a person not a number

If you can suck up the expense, you are better off not doing the meatgrinder thing. It will suck making payments, but you will still be a driver 5 years from now and probably making a really good living.

You can probably make $6000 more your first year with the smaller company.

should anyone ever wonder if it is possible to change your mind and go to a different carrier let me tell you that it isn't easy. i spoke to the smaller carrier and it is a dream job. it's everything I'm looking for better pay, better hometime, and being a name not a number. i visited them and they were very interested in hiring me. then they ran the application past their insurance company and it seems it's a no go. here's how it works...if you pay for your schooling then you would sit right beside me and learn exactly the same thing in exactly the same amount of time and recieve your graduation certificate. i however (according to drivers solutions) am not fully trained because i didn't finish the otr phase of the training and will not receive my certificate until i do so. the school and drivers solutions will hold onto your transcripts like it's the hope diamond. they ain't releasing nothing. without some form of proof that you went through the 120 hours training then the smaller carrier's insurance company doesn't want to cover you. even though i would be going through another 240 hours training before the small company will let me drive alone. doesn't make sense to me but apparantly ds has run into this before and knows how to shut it down. i don't know how it benefits them to keep me from working because i was planning on paying them back within a year anyway. the small carrier is trying to find a work around but probably won't be able to.
purpleangel7 and airforcetoo Thank this.
