This is my very first post! I've been trying to read the posts about bad trucking companies-trying to find one that would be good to work for. My Significant Other is currently training with CR England. He's not a happy camper! He's had his CDL for years and always wanted to go over the road. Well, now he's making that happen.
After reading everything on CRE (after he had already started his training) both he and I have realized this might not be our 'dream' company (LOL) He asked me to pose a question to this forum on 2 specific companies. CFI and TransAm. I've found information on TransAm but not CFI. Is there anyone out there that would be interested in sharing information on this company? Thanks bunches in advance!

CFI is now owned by the LTL outfit known as Con-Way. I imagine Con-Way wanted a truckload division, so they bought CFI. I imagine CFI drivers will probably move some of Con-way's linehaul loads as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if CFI became all teams in the very near future because of this.

Thanks Mack for the response. I'll see what I can find on Con-Way now. This forum is great for information by the way! Too bad the boyfriend didn't know about this before signing on with CRE.

cfi was purchased by the conway company, however they will still run under the cfi name....it will just be called cfi "a conway company".
i worked for cfi for 7 months and i have no complaints. this is coming from someone whom was terminated. i was terminated because i had 3 motorist complaints in a 6 month period. all of their equipment is in tip top shape, and if it's not they have no problem getting you routed to their 24 hour service terminal. the majority of folks that work at cfi are very happy. people don't just walk around and complain like alot of other companies. insurance is cheap at under 10 a week, you can bank your days off, the terminals have wifi. and i consistantly got 3000+ miles a week. they will also pay for a shower if your somewhere you didn't fuel. or give you 10 bucks off of a motel if you send in the receipt. their terminals are nice and friendly with clean towells and clean showers. cfi moves alot of mexican freight so laredo would end up being a popular run....which is ok because when you get to a terminal you can choose from a variety of loads when you get there....and it's usually miles going out. you are allowed to elect to go home after 10 days...then they have 5 days to get you home or they dead head you home and pay you for it too.....they pay all miles you are dispatched including the ones home....and it's practical miles. you get a north east bonus of 5 cents per mile for any north east runs....and you get a safety bonus every quarter which comes out to 350 to 400 bucks.

banking days is really cool....cause if you stay out 4 weeks and take off 1 day...you bank 3....which you can use anytime and they roll over....you can take as many days off in a row as long as you have those banked....so if you have a month banked, you can take off a month.

cfi will never go to just teams....cfi will run just as cfi has always run.

probably one of the best companies out there....they most certainly have a higher profit margin than any other trucking company. that's a fact.

My wife and i currenetly drive for CFI but soon will be leaving them. With the new pay package Conway has endorsed to take effect on January 1st we have decided its time to leave. For a new driver coming in to the company its an ideal company to work for with great equipment. But for those of us drivers that have been here building the compay to what it is, they are reducing the speed of the trucks to 65 thus reducing our team pay by 1200.00 per month. We hate to leave but we refuse to take this deep of a cut in our pay. Good luck to your husband

CFI is a company to be leary of. As a new driver, you WILL make mistakes. CFI will lie and ruin your DAC making it hard for you to get another job. So, watch it carefully. Equipment is very good, miles are decent. However, they were bought out by Conway this past summer. All you need to know about Conway is what they did to CF several years ago. I retired from driving this past fall, and one of my best friends still drives for them,[10 years] and tells me they are going downhill pretty quick. Sounds like they are wanting to get rid of the experienced drivers, and go with the cheaper labor.

Advice from an old guy to you rookies. 1. SLOW DOWN, 2.GET OFF YOUR ###, AND LOOK WHERE YOU ARE BACKING INTO. 3. SLOW DOWN

I was wondering if/when they would cut the trucks back. I was (still am) doubtful that it would actually happen though, since the Conway Team Trucks always ran faster than the day cabs. I guess high fuel cost gets to everyone.

I have to say Ditto to Codgers post as well. They treated me great for the first year or so, and right at the end, it got down right unbearable. No miles, sitting 36-48 hrs per week. I would occassionally run into a student driver that I had trained, and they were always telling me they ran 3K plus per week....cheaper I guess. While I had to ride everyones #$$ to get 2600-2800.

Personally, I can't justify staying away from my family for less than $900 a week bring home.

A quick trip to the war room before I left.... 9600 and some change was the target fleetwide average they were trying to maintain. Which equaled about $900 before taxes..... not enough for OTR in my opinion.

Thank you to all that have posted and answered my questions on CFI. I think the boyfriend has decided against them. Although between CRE and CFI, I'm sure CFI is a better company to work for.
At this point, I'm not sure what he's going to do. It sure sounds like the trucking industry has changed a bunch in the past 20 years or so. So much so that it's hard to find a good fit with any company.
I wish all you out there trucking the best of luck and safe returns!

I would advise him to reconsider CFI. Even though I dislike them, they are a good place to start. Or at least they were when I left. I can't tell you much about their current state of affairs, since the buy out. Other that what I see, and hear from others, which may be biased.

IF he goes with Trans Am, advise him NOT to do a lease purchase. This is not a good idea. I would give that advise about any company that offers lease purchase.
