My company refuses to put APU's on any of their trucks, but they pay a fuel bonus which is impossible to consistantly get in the summer. I want to hear from other drivers on an alternative to an APU or such system or setup, any and all comments and suggestions.. Thanks.

Before listing any possibility how much is the bonus?

There are alternatives but cost a fair amount and may be cheaper in the long term to just not get the bonus.

that's true; if it cost's u $1000 for an alternative apu & they only give u $500 (for the whole year), it isn't worth it, plus once u install something on a company truck, most of those companies tell u that once u install it, it stays whether u quit, get fired, etc

the fuel bonus is maximum 50.00 a week...The bad part is if you fail to get at least 5.0 mpg, they deduct 25.00 from your pay..It is not right at all, but what are you suppose to do, their company, their rules....

That does suck man. They don't have threshold's like if its above a certain temp you can idle? That's like telling you either suffer or we take money from you.

Our company was Charged with a Labor dispute from a Ex driver, the driver won. one of the things in the dispute was the company charging him fees for problems. Such as partial payment for a flat tire. The company was fined for unfair labor practice and other things. If they fine you, you have to agree to each and every time in writing. and if they Use your job to scare you to sign, they can be found guilty of even more violations. Ours found out the hard way.

My plan is to drive the **** out of their trucks, until i can afford my own, and then do things my way as far as equipment.. Just didn't know what an alternative to an APU was...

    This is what I use : http://waeco.com/en/products/3882.php

1/5 the price of an APU! it's basically the same as the 110v unit you can plug into the APU, waeco is 'domestic ' in the states, will run for 30 hours on the trucks batteries without need to restart, even then they will cut out before they run down the trucks batteries, cost nothing to run, topped up mine with gas 2 years ago and that's the only service cost ever ( $50 approx ) totally silent ! They will supply with a fitting kit so no drilling or cutting! Oh and ah they will freeze the nuts off a brass monkey if you wanted it to!

Before this one I had a water evaporator unit, worked fine till about 35 deg Celsius ( not sure in f's) but when the water in the supply tank got hot it deminised in cooling performance! Even in Italian summers I never turned my waeco up past 4! I have a powerful inverter for 240 volt and fridge, cab and engine block heater and microwave are standard without an APU, which are expensive but also we don't have room for them but in fairness they are not nessecary !

Quit. Period. Even the Mega Carriers won't try that bull. They try to persuade you to, but liability issues prevent them from trying to enforce it and even local anti-idling is unenforceable or is held in abeyance for certain health (sleep) issues. Sounds like you need a new company.

    coolerAC.jpg How about this?

Put frozen 2 liters in it and it will last a few days. Then bags of ice.
