I am pretty sure that the DEF in the SCR is there to reduce the NOx. The DPF takes care of the soot. So previous post is correct, to a certain degree. It isn't separation of CO2 and Oxygen that the SCR takes care of, it is the separation of Nitrogen and Oxygen. The varying oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) supposedly is the primary source of smog pollution. The SCR breaks these components apart and turns them back into harmless oxygen and nitrogen.
But windsmith is also right, it allows dialing back on EGR which also results in less soot. That is why most, if not all, of the newer engines with SCR also have reduced instances of DPF regeneration to clear out the accumulated soot. Now if they could get the SCR to be effective enough to allow total elimination of EGR on the engines, then it might not be such a bad deal all the way around.
The heck is DEF?

Just another pump at the pilot that don't work right. And the hose acts like it'll never reach no matter what you driving.
-insert name- Thanks this. -
You just have to pull harder on the hoses and move you truck 30 times to get it there.

Agree 100%. I don't like the Pilot, only used as a last resort. I.E last chance for 20 miles with the truck cursing at you.

just another load of crap.lies produced by the EPA to get the manufactures of diesel engines to de-tune the product so it will continue to break down and cost us more money.somehow those whining crybaby a-holes in california called pita / carb are behind all of it.LIES,LIESand more LIES
RAGE 18 Thanks this. -
Actually, SCR allows them to re tune the engines back to pre EGR performance levels and then some. Do some research so you don't appear so ignorant.
