It can be done, however, the amounts of DEF required don't make it practical for on highway applications. You would be looking at 8-10% DEF consumption in comparison to diesel. In the Agriculture industry we are several years behind in the need to comply with emissions regs. Several manufactures have touted the benefits of DEF and claim that they don't need run any exhaust gas to meet regulations. So for us is just mean filling another tank in the morning before we head to the field. Weight isn't so much an issue on a tractor or combine. But suppose you had to carry another couple of hundred pounds of DEF on your truck. Is the DOT going to allow extra weight for emissions junk? I don't think so. more weight on truck means less weight for cargo, and we all know what that means.

Just as an example as to what our fuel consumption did on our combine. We had a SISu engine full tier 3 with egr in a massey combine. It would burn 15-18 gallons per hour. now the same engine at the same HP, with the DEF system in our new gleaner burn 11-13 gallons per hour. with approx. 1 gallon of DEF, consumed. So for us the dollar savings for fuel was significant. The other thing that was apparent was less soot in the oil, I don't have the oil analysis in the house but we could run to the recommended 250 hrs on an oil change no problem where as the massey with egr, if it ran that long, the oil would hardly come out the engine. It was so bad that the manufacture changed reduced the oil change interval by half.

All and all, I'll take the DEF systems, Actually, if someone could get a way around using any of the emissions technology, I'd go that route.

And DEF is a refined synthetic product. Manufactured to high tolerances of purity. Using products other than DEF in the system can cause failure. And those little pumps, injector units and catalysts are pricey. Mechanics have told me that washer fluid will work in an emergency to get you off of the road, or out of the bush if you run out, but don't run it in there for to long, or your replacing parts.

all new european trucks for the last few years have had a similar system only here its called "AD BLUE" should have been called "AD GREEN" though $$$ ,common thought is some tree hugging politician with a big eye on revenue got the truck manufacturers to find a way of making the trucks cleaner while at the same time find another way of taxation on fuel, mpg is in real terms the same, very little improvement !! Some trucks (most) lose power when the adblue runs out so not using it isn't an option, various ways of by-passing the pee tank are and have been tried but to my knowledge not very successfully, its a very clever way of raising revenue by governments here because now to enter many city centres the older the engine ie pre adblue the more expensive the daily "entry charge" London being a prime example ,the low emmisions zone surrounding london goes out as far as the m25 motorway which at best is miles & miles outside the city centre !! as far as the technical side of horse pi** i have no idea !!:biggrin_25517:

pretty soon the government will decide we are too stupid to keep the DEF tank full so they will make the fuel companies mix it for us before they put it in the tanks at the truckstops making all the older trucks obsolete.

They have a concentrated version that lasts longer than the liquid. It's called DEF JAM.
