I run the city and help with linehaul on occasions. I've only been with them for a little over a month, but here's what I can tell ya. Linehaul is paid by the mile, and also for drop and hooks, along with fueling, and prob a couple other things. They do hire without doubles experience, as long as you already have the endoresment. I think the linehaul guys could go up to about 400 miles away from their home terminal. Which means there are some runs that require a layover at a hotel. That's about all I can tell ya.

 

Like most LTL's they are on mileage pay.

You can do up to 600 mile run under current HOS, but theyre tight and you have to keep the left door shut and have perfect weather. Most are around 500 though.

Be wary of where you go, fedex just did a major linehaul change of operations and alot of terminals lost run and guys are now extraboard just doing dockwork if that. So dont go in with too high of expectations. Fedex is heavy into rail so as youve been doing just shuttling trailers back and forth..eff that crap.

And yes you will slipseat. A city guy will use your truck during the day and a linehaul guy uses it at night.

 

I have an additional question. I have often thought about why it is that LTL companies use pup trailers for shuttling freight from one location to another on their line haul lanes and not just use 48 and 53 footers????

 

From what I have seen they are very versatile. Since LTL freight can go in any direction from a hub, you can put freight for a certain lane in one pup. With a van all the freight gets lumped in and it takes longer to get to the right lane door on the dock. Both pups can be unloaded at the same time, if that makes sense. I'm sure there are other reasons, just cant think of them right now

Yep. The terminal I am starting at just picked up a whole bunch more Freight. We are a smaller terminal with only 30 drivers. e will only have 2 on the extra board and those guys only average 2 days a month with no runs............

With fedex freight in jersey road driver, looking to transfer to Texas. Have a family, heard Fort Worth is nice. Anyone out of that terminal? Have an idea what the worst run is?

 

I'm not out of Fort Worth but I do know we just opened a new barn in North Fort Worth. I know a road driver from there and he likes it real well.

 

I recently applied for Road Driver out of the Longview, TX and Tyler, TX terminals. I have my HazMAt and Double/Triples endorsements and have atleast 1 year experience. Neither one of them hired me.. Well I called the Longview terminal and they told me the position has already been filled. And its been 2 or 3 weeks since I applied to the Tyler terminal. Still haven't heard anything. So kind of bummed about that. How long did it take for them to call yall back after yall applied? Also another question, I went by the Longview Terminal and they have a lot of 53" and doubles out there. Are the 53" city drivers or road drivers? I thought all the road drivers pulled the 27" doubles.

 

Yea FXF road drivers pull pups 99% of the time.
They'll send a road driver out with a 53' once in a great while just to get it to a terminal that's expanding and getting low on long boxes.
