I've read several posts by current drivers that say if they could start over again, they would do it differently. They would let X pay for training or get a grant, or fork it out themselves..............................................
My current situation is that I'm planning to start a local certified school that every company I check with, says is a good school and approved. The tuition is about $4500. I can pay this if I have to, and have enough saved so far for tuition and expenses while going to school for 5 or 6 weeks. Looking hard at KLLM, Roehl and Interstate Dist as my first company. Would like to OTR for about 2 years, and make a decision about staying OTR or finding a good Regional or LTL type job, maybe yanking doubles. Question is: Is there any grant or other available funding to help with tuition. I make about 60K a year now, so no low income grants that I know of. Not a veteran. Should I just bite the bullet and fork it over, should I find a company and let them train me, then have a ball and chain on my neck for a year or two? I want to hear from people who have already gone through the training and are driving now.
    Thanks, NEWB

If you have the means to pay, by all means pay for it. I would bet that the companies that you are looking at will all offer tuition reimbursement, I know KLLM does. That way you aren't locked into a company, but if you do stay your tuition will be repaid.

I drive for maverick. They will provide your school, but there is wait to get in. You will need to work for them for 6 months if they provide the school. If you are not in a hurry that would be a plus. Some companies will offer tuition reimburement so check around. Of the ones you listed I would probably say roehl. Some states have grants so I would look into that as well. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Went through the "we pay for your school, you work for us for a year" deal, myself.

All in all, it's not that bad of a deal. I personally have no problems with it. But, you will hear some horror stories from others. Personally, I can put up with a lot of crap, so it isn't that bad for me.

As for what you want to do, I see at as a sort of "six of one, half a dozen of another" sort of deal. There are upsides and downs to anyway you do it.

Paying for school. - If you pay for it first then you have cash out of pocket up front. If you get training through a school and end up paying them back you get to pay them later. Or you might not have to pay at all. You are not committed to them. But if it works out it does. I would rather not part with my cash until I have to.
Roehl charges $2400 for a 3 week class for a CDL if you end up paying for it. After that you are getting paid for training. And the classes are prorated so if you don't stay you only pay the prorated part.
My local PTDi school wants $4500 up front. No refunds, no nothing. Sounds like they are more interested in my money than teaching me a skill.
I did alot of research and Roehl looks good to me. A good company and a fair deal for the training.
    I start 11/26/2007.
Any questions feel free to ask.

YO, Newb....can I get your old job when you quit to go drive trucks? No matter what it is, I'll do it...for a little while, at the very least.

60K a year and you're home every night, sleeping in your own house and your own bed. You can take a shower three times a day if you want. You can do laundry as many times as you want, whenever you want. If you need to run an important errand around town, you can just go do it. If you see a snowstorm coming, you can go inside and keep warm by the fireplace if you have one. You can cook your own meals in your own kitchen, using bulk food you can buy at Kroger. You can make a sandwich for 50 cents instead of paying 3 bucks for one already made.

Why do you want to get into trucking, if I may ask?

I'd keep doing that job, unless you absolutely positively hate it. 60K....I wish I knew what that looked like. I'd be doing it even if I did hate it. This is because I know what trucking is really like. Can you say "jailhouse on wheels?"

Here are my choices. THE ONLY WAY I WOULD DO IT AGAIN!!!

    1. Central Tech, Oklahoma

You may have to sign with a company first to get a seat at Central Tech. If not, it may be a long waiting list. Just make sure its a decent company also. Remember, its only a year commitment. It goes by quick and its important you start out on a good note.

Crete did have a good training deal going at a local community college in Lincoln, and it was even reasonably priced.

Does anyone know if that program is still going? I've not read any posts here from those who went through that program, at least not in a long time. It sounds #### good, actually. Hopefully, it's still being offered.

I've heard of that place in Oklahoma, WC. It sounded like a good deal, too.

I can't reply for him. However, I will answer for myself. Walking into the same building every day is a like going into a jail without wheels. I much prefer the wheels myself. I did my time, raised my kids. Now I am so ready not to walk into the same building every day, go to the same house very night and put in 5 days so I can get out and enjoy my weekends. And I actually like my current job, it is just the conditions that are tied to working in the same place day after day after day. ARGH!!! As for me, I want some variety in my daily scenery and people i talk to. I want some freedom from someone watching over my shoulder even if they are complimenting the work I do. I have always been too darn stubborn to be a slave to things. And the people I voluntarily put myself in servitude for now have their own lives. Now, it is my time to do what I want. A jail with wheels sounds wonderful to me now. In every job, you answer to others. That is a fact of life. Keeping them at a distance while watching the world through my windshield is probably about as much freedom as I can have.

Different people have different desires. These even change at different times of life. Still and all, I have always been able to appreciate the majesty of life and occaionally to share it with others. Now, I am just looking forward to have more hours for that.

thanks for taking the time to peruse my words,
    Demmy

    I'm with Dem,
A cubicle or an office seems like a jail to me. I have an offer to come be an insurance agent for a friend of mine's company. No way! I know the money would be good. But the repetitive nature of the environment and work and people would drive me nuts. I don't think I would even want a dedicated route for the same reason. I like change and changes in my scenery.
I am not giving up my real estate gig until I know the OTR thing is really for me though. I sure hope it does.
