thanks for the heads up! seems like a needle in a haystack trying to find that. trying to decide wheterh to go thru company training or private. am sure its all a gamble. but reading horror stories on company schools is really something to think about. any other advice on which companies to look into?

So with RoadMaster you don't have to go OTR with a stranger for weeks at a time? I am in Texas and have been studying the CDL manual but when looking at training, the idea of going thru a carrier and going OTR for weeks with a trainer just, makes me uneasy. What happens if someone already pased the written tests and has there CDL permit? Does that matter at the school?

Sorry for the late reply - had to pack up my life right about the time of your post then head to Dallas for orientation with US Xpress. My recommendation is to go through a CDL school rather than company training. You have so many options when you get your CDL. There are quite a few companies out there who accept recent graduates and some even offer tuition reimbursement. I will have a post on my blog soon that will share some of the insight I gained while researching companies. I'm really glad I went into debt to get my CDL rather than become an indentured servant to some company.

Sorry for the late reply - had to pack up my life in 4 days and head to Dallas for orientation with US Xpress. The OTR time with a stranger comes once you get hired on with a company that accepts recent graduates. My post from this evening gives more insight in the the CDL school process and the path for a new commercial driver. trucker-girl.blogspot.com/b/post-preview?token=bhKIozgBAAA.IoANlI2xFdRlnG9FnPP5eA.RJ5sPl0zQFebs_oShLNP6w&postId=5845020974591404228&type=POST Depending on what company you go with, your OTR time with a driver trainer can range from 4-8 weeks. Trust me, you'll want to do it as the CDL schools do not get you ready to hit the road. Only to get your CDL.

Congrats Truckergirl - sounds like youre one the road! Best of luck to you. im still vascillating between co sponsored OTR school and a private CDL school. My huge fear is that Ill spend $6000 and no on will offer me a job. How many apps did you put out before you landed where you are?

Thanks for the heads up on Roadmaster school. Im looking at both that one and Sage. Certainlly am scouring the forum for pros and cons.

Another half century lady trying to make it. Smiles. Good luck!

I'm really glad I went the private school route. Of the 3 companies I applied to all 3 invited us to orientation. Keep in mind going to orientation does not mean you're hired. But, if you did not lie or hold anything back on your initial application, don't faile the drug test, and you don't screw up doing orientation you will probably be fine. I understand your concern but it really does seem like there are plenty of openings. There are at least 5 companies that accept recent CDL graduates. In fact, their whole model is based off hiring recent graduates and pumping them through the system. It looks to me that if you have a reasonably clean background, driving record, and drug test history you can get a job. The school offers job placement and they state a 90+% hire rate. My guess is the ones that don't ultimately get hired probably failed their drug test, lied on their application, or screwed up during orientation. I feel your stress tho. Mine was in different areas but this feels like such a big deal. Making this kind of life change mid-life is no small step! Do your research then follow your dream.

Quick question: a few times cruising down I-410 I've seen a Roadmaster truck on the shoulder of the service road with the 4-ways on. Were you guys switching drivers? Going over some important lesson? Getting yelled at by the instructor? Just curious, I've seen it more than once so I wanted to ask.
