If you had a choice of working for either USX or JBH as a solo OTR driver which one would you choose and why?

I can't speak for JBH from experience. I have a little insight into the industry courtesy of my boyfriend having held a CDL for the last 17 years. Today we finished Day 2 of orientation at US Xpress and I have a very good feeling about them based on my research and what I've learned from him. He also has a very good feeling about the company. I think that speaks volumes. He's had concerns about going with one of the big carriers but our options to team are limited because I'm a recent graduate. Their equipment is good and it seems they truly care about their drivers. The pay is good and word at terminal is drivers are getting miles. I have a blog that I hope to update more often than I have been: trucker-girl.blogspot.com. Hopefully I'll be able to provide a little insight for you there. I haven't updated it yet with my USX Orientation experience but I should have something up there tomorrow.

I worked for JB Hunt for just 3 months on a dedicated RUN for Georgia Pacific out of Crossett, AR. Most of the runs were good, with average weekly miles between 2200 and 2700 miles. However, the week out with 2 days off, didn't measure up. I was lucky to get home for my 34 restart and then they would want you to start driving in the evening. Getting you home when you needed to be there, with AMPLE NOTICE didn't work either. I missed several appointments and my Wifes surgery. Got home eventually, but not when requestd. The planner was not a driver, so he had no clue about the trials and tribulations of being a driver, the fleet manager had no clue about driving either. You would get a routine 1500 mile trip to Delaware and they expected you there in 2 days, I'm a good driver, but not SUPERMAN! On one of my breaks at home, about half way through the reset, my manager called and wanted me to run a load (short haul) from West Monroe, LA to Jackson, MS, about 150 miles. Told him I didn't have the hours and would have to start my reset all over again for the load planned out of Crossett in 1 day. Told I couldn't do it and he actually sounded like he was begging me to take the run. Not gonna take a hit with DOT if I were stopped without enough hours available and you know JB would deny ever having assigned the load, knowing I was almost out of hours.

For the most part they are like all the major carriers, get the loads delivered and don't complain!

I was hired by JBH for this dedicated run and so far the guys that I came on board with, have either quit or are thinking about it, for the same reasons.

Be careful and do your research.

I quit in June and will be returning to USX in August. They were my first company and far and away the best I have worked for yet!

    Hope this helps.
