New to tanker hauling--need advice on getting product out of the hose???

    Well... Things have been going better. It turns out that at the end of the aqua ammonia delivery most all of the other guys drain the leftovers into a 5 gallon bucket. Then they let u dump it in their cooling water. Nice of them to tell me that after about 10 offloads there! Regardless, I want to understand more about it. Curious what a suction hose is? Also "goosing the throttle" what's that mean? Can u play with the customers product valve while u have your blow down line aired up to build some pressure then release it to give a little more air thrust? I think my pump is a geared one. All I know is people say its cheap and junky!

    If I have the pump still running but have closed my internal and not yet thrown air thru the line am I creating a vacuum in my pump line and not really moving any product? When u say u leave your internal open and walk the line a few times are u leaving the internal open so that you can keep the flow going thru your hose. Is that when u are getting the bulk of the product out of the hose? And then throw some air thru it to clean it up some more? ...after closing the internal valve that is.

    Do you use a vapor recovery hose,going from the customers tank into your trailer?

    Yep we use a vapor recovery line. Sounds like you and I are pretty much in the same business.

    Now it's all making a little more sense why I'm ending with so much product. I really appreciate you helping me out.

    Yes and we haul the same stuff. Could it be the same company?? Are you the new driver in buckeye?

    I'm just wondering what sort of company sends you out on the road without the appropriate training, especially with such hazardous material. An accident waiting to happen.....frightening!!

    I haul NH4OH (aqua ammonia) 19% to 30% and NH3 only. Here is the way we do it and we specialize in this field. Make sure you wear ALL of your proper PPE when you are connecting and disconnecting any hoses whether liquid or vapor.

    1. Once your tank trailer is empty you will hear the rpm's on your pony motor or hydrapak rev up. I assume you are using a gas pony motor so I will use this for an example.

    2. Turn off pony motor

    3. Close valves at your end. Leave customer valves open. (They should have a check valve)

    4. Close your internals.

    5. Start your truck up engage idle and release the trailer brakes (to ensure you have plenty of air for the blow down. Your trailer wheels should be chocked.)

    6. Connect your air hose to the bleeder nipple on the liquid side of your piping. Then to your air supply on your trailer.

    7. Close the customer valve about half way. (you can skip this step but it will build more air pressure for the blow down.)

    8. Open your air supply valve and the valve at the bleeder. You will hear and feel the hose getting air pressure.

    9. Walk the liquid line from your tank to the customers tank. Twice.

    10. On the second walk, keep your hose high or level with their piping and close their valve for a few seconds then open it for a few seconds to burp the liquid through. (Do this twice then leave their valve closed.)

    11. Then go and close your bleeder valve and the air supply valve.

    12. Remove the air hose from both bleeders.

    13. Now you are ready to bleed the liquid line. (You may still have some liquid in the line so be cautious.) Hold a 5 gallon bucket under the liquid bleeder nipple. Crouch up wind and open the bleeder valve slowly releasing the pressure that is in the line. (Some liquid may come out into the bucket.) Once all the air pressure is out of the line, put your bucket on the ground under the nipple and walk your liquid line from the customer tank to your trailer to remove any liquid remaining.

    14. Now remove the liquid connection to the customer tank and place that end in it's holder on the trailer.

    15. Next remove the connection to your trailer and pour any remaining liquid in 5 gallon bucket. ( should be minimal if any)

    16. Now close vapor valve to customer tank and your trailer.

    17. Holding 5 gallon bucket under vapor bleeder valve open it slowly releasing any pressure.

    18. Remove vapor hose from customer connection, place it in its proper place on trailer, then remove vapor hose from connection on trailer and pour rest into bucket if any. (remember you may have some liquid in your vapor line)

    19. Put all your caps on and double check all valves.
