For years, I've heard that "If you have a light on your truck, it MUST work" and heard stories about a driver being cited for an extra, unnecessary, not required by law, "chicken light" being burned out.
The way I'm reading that is they can only cite you for a REQUIRED light not working....but any auxiliary or additional light that you CHOOSE to put on the truck does NOT necessarily have to work. Am I reading that wrong?
Got chicken lights?

As with any law, it's all in how the cop and judge interpret it. If you've got a good lawyer, don't sweat the lights. But if it were me, I'd just stock up on the lights and replace 'em as needed. Cheaper than a lawyer or the delay and hassle of being cited.

Light out= reason to have an interaction with the law. Or, they now have a reason to look you over as close as they want. I have a love/hate relationship with the lights on my PETE. They are just so cool, but they are also a liability and a pain to keep 100%.

You are reading the reg correctly.CAXPT Thanks this.

There was another big discussion on this somewhere. I think the old DB thread?
The rule is as written. How it's interpreted? Everyone says if it's there it must work.
When I ran dump occasionally the loader would bust a chicken light. My boss would get mad and completely knock the light off with a shovel yelling, "they won't fine me now".
So you see there is one case of someone getting wrote up. I don't really see how they can. I would challenge them.
Then again if you are like a bug attracted to a bug light you will fix it. Two hundred lights, what's a few spares!

no one even looks at my chicken lights on the truck. and id on't even use the things. i don't like all that light at night.
when i started 13 years ago. the coops used to pull you in for a clearance light on the cab. now a days. the only peons are the cops. not one coop has pulled me in for a clearance light. -

Try reading the regs, they say you are incorrect.
