Hey Wannabe! Get yourself a crossbow. It's like shooting a rifle and has a lot of stopping power. Real good archers generally started when they were kids and bows take a lot of practice and skill in the aiming. I shoot crossbow because I didn't start out young and I don't want to wound an animal and maybe not be able to track it down so it dies in pain and the meat goes to waste. I'm sure of my shots with a crossbow and what I hit goes down on the spot or not far away. Hunting is great and being outdoors is the best. Trucking is like that. Roll the windows down and you're outdoors and you always gotta hunt down that next load (lol).
Don't let the Minahunees get ya'!

some states don't allow cross-bow unless you have a medical need.
-
True but hunting is where you find it and I think most of those stated are back east somewhere. Could be wrong but I live in Texas so never had any problems.
-
Minnesota and the states around here don't allow it without a medical reason
-
Yeah Massachusetts is the same way. Can't have a crossbow unless you have a medical reason. But then again, Massachusetts doesn't allow you to do much of anything without some kind of reason LMAO!

Thank you docfrank I appreciate it. Yeah the family time is deffinatly not like it would be at a 9-5 but certainly better than what I was doing before that's for sure! In time I will be able to make it home more and maybe even get a local driving job if the pay is good.
Wannabe-that's great your already into fishing and outdoors. As far as hunting and now hunting goes practice makes perfect my friend. I shot a bow for 5 years growing up before I ever killed anything with it. You should google archery shops near you and go in and talk to them about getting set up with a starter bow and explain to them you are just starting out and would like them to walk you through everything. Most shops have great people that are more than willing to help out someone new to the sport/lifestyle. Plus alot of shops also have indoor archery ranges where they can teach you how to shoot and even sight in your bow for the first time. After that you can buy a target and practice at home in the backyard whenever you can. If you got some buddies to shoot with it can turn into alot of fun if you throw a few bucks on the table and see who can make some crazy shots haha. Me and my buddies will challenge each other to some crazy stuff like shooting out the back seat of a pickup truck while it's moving slowly haha. It's alot of fun. The biggest thing is to never get discouraged. There's days where I can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn but on my good days I can nail the bottom of a soda can at 100 yards. You will have plenty of days where nothing seems to go right. The best thing is to just take a break and come back to it either later that day or the next day. It works wonders. I've had clients that show up to a 20 thousand dollar elk hunt and shoot their bows or guns before heading out into the back country to make sure everything is good and I've watched guys completly miss the target with a bow at 20 yards!! But then later that week they nail a big bull elk at 65yrds like it was nothing.
But all in all I hope you get into the sport it's alot of fun and can be a great experience all around and it's always good to have more hunters around. If you need any other advice or have any questions feel free to PM me anytime. This stuff was my job and has been my passion for years. I am sure I can accommodate 99% of your questions for ya.DocFrank and wanna_be_trucker Thank this. -
Being in the brush country of south Texas most of my deer hunting was from stands (very Zen), but dove and quail I like to walkabout. Also what could be better than running a trot line all night with some friends? Beer and BBQ yeah mama! And down here it's hog hunting all year long. Really big problem in some areas with feral hogs.Adkhunter Thanks this. -
Thank you Doc! Texas is a great place to hunt. I've hunted deer and pigs down there a few times now. Had alot of fun down there for sure! I'm the same as you I hunt stands primarily for deer. I have a climbing stand that I will pack in and climb way up high to try and get above the deers nose the best I can. And it helps to stay out of the line of sight. I'll use blinds now and then as well. All depends on the terrain and stuff and what kind of weapon I'm carrying on that day. Turkey hunting I'm always on the move. I love hunting spring gobblers. Lots of action and excitement throughout the hunt. Duck and goose hunting has become one of my favorite things to hunt as well. Got into that pretty heavily out in Kansas and man o man that was a good time!
