I currently book his loads for Schneider. It does give him the advantage where I see the load and can book it quickly, instead of him booking it when he gets to the truck stop. He has been on the board for about 4 years now. Financially we can't clear the week without at least $3000 gross in loads, take out fuel, insurance, and other costs and he ends up with less than $1000 for the week. We lowered his truck payment to $850/mo by buying a used Schneider 2006 Freightliner sleeper. Some of the drivers we talk to are paying that much weekly for a lease!!! I'm just tired of him being broke all the time. Seems that when we start to get ahead of the game, it's time for new tires!

Trucking Jobs in 30 seconds
Every month 400 people find a job with the help of TruckersReport.
-
Slowing down from 65 to 55 would mean about $300 less a week in fuel. It will also make the tires last longer. -
Tell him to learn how to pull open deck.

There are some great freight opportunities here just like there are some bad ones. I know of an agency desperately seeking drivers for dedicated lanes in the southeast right now, as are we. It's just hard to come by. I've got loads that pay great but we don't have enough drivers who care to run the lanes they are in....and those are the good lanes. For every good load, there are 3 garbage loads or "cut and paste" loads, which are the same load posted by 2-3 "agents" who do nothing more than copy and paste off the CH Robinson board or CR England board. You just have to network and find the good agents and weed out the bad ones. Overall, I'm confident with a team mentality of you finding loads and him running you could do very well for yourselves here.
G/MAN and scottied67 Thank this. -
I have been leased to Landstar for 14 years. I just finished reading all the post's on this topic. I can honestly say that Landstar is not for everyone. If you have been driving for or leased to a company that supplies you with all your loads then you might not get along well here. If you dont like to keep your equipment compliant and safe you might not get along well here. If you don't want to keep paperwork up to date and complient you wont get along here. There are all kinds of freight and agents at Landstar, great, good, so-so and terrible. Thats at every co. you have to take the good with the bad. When asked about Landstar by other drivers I tell them to give it a try. But you need to give it a year! Why you ask? IT will take that long to learn the system, the agent's the freight lanes and the areas you want to run. Remember you are competing with almost 9,000 other Landstar drivers for freight. There are a few things that even now I don't like with Landstar. But the most important thing is I know they will be here with my paycheck tomorrow!!! A lot of the freight that hit's the load board is garbage freight. Agent's that look at load boards all day and post broker freight. It won't take you long to figure out who they are. Find the area you want to run and look for agent's in that area. you might have to take some lower paying loads to get in with some of them but it will help in the long run. I only work for about 4 agents and do very well. If you are willing to work and be safe and compliant you will get along well at Landstar
scottied67, dloving8915 and russellkanning Thank this. -
I think that some leave Landstar before giving themselves enough time to learn their way around.
-
The people that ##### about companies like landstar aren't Truckers... they are drivers... they are used to others dispatching them and getting miles for them... they also always had to have park place and boardwalk in monopoly they think they can get rich off of just a few loads.. they don't understand freight markets and freight lanes let alone seasonal freight... the know nothing of the industry... and they cry to OOIDA when they are the stupid ones..
RizenPhoenix, WatsonDL1 and LSAgentOZR Thank this. -
I don't know how true this is but I was always told that if you owned your own trailer and it was paid for that the trailer would pay for it's maintenance and the maintenance on the tractor as well as give you an extra $3-$500 a month to boot.
