So today was securement training for me as I'm going to be a new flatbedder. When they got to the shotgun coils something seemed hinkey and I decided to dig through the FMCSR book and I'm just looking for some clarification.
Now according to the safety guy teaching the class a shotgun coil, regardless of weight, must be secured by 2 chains through the eye in an X, 2 horseshoe chains, and one over the top. Now to me this seems like overkill for something like a 10k lb coil. Now when I checked my practical cargo securement book and the FMCSR I believe it states that you can secure shotgun coils by:
A: using 2 chains crossed in an X through the eye and one over the top
B: Using 2 chains one on each side in a horseshoe and one over the top
C: Using 2 straps or chains over the top of the coil one at the rear and one at the front of the coil.
All of the above assume coil bunks with friction mats and coil weights low enough to only need 2-3 chains/straps. Info above is what I understand reading part 393.120 (d) of the FMCSR. Am I correct?

You secure by weight, so your going to put more chains on a 40k coil than a 10 k coil, personally on a 10k coil I would just throw a horseshoe chain on each side and hit the road, its your choice to do all of that extra work.

Because you're working for a fleet they have lowered the training standard so that no matter how inept a driver is IF you do the same thing over and over again eventually even the dumbest will get it. By saying that ALL shotgun coils will be secured a certain way they have left ZERO interpretation for the driver and they treat all drivers as mental midgets.Logan76 Thanks this.

According to the FMCSR regs your load would not be secured properly.

Chain over the top? What? They want you to throw a chain and it may come over and take an eye or a jaw out? I find 2-4 straps over the top are just enough.

Unfortunately enforcement of the load securement regs is not a priority with law enforcement. Look @ some of the crap on trailers>you will shake your head in amazement that it even makes it across town let alone on the Interstate. One of my favourites is the guys that haul steel beams in particular. Do these mental midgets know that when they jump on the brakes those beams are coming through the headboard and back of the bunk @ them. No one belly wraps any more>is it even taught any more?

i do the crossing chains in the eye, and one over the top, then after i tarp sometimes i put another on, we have some bad tarps and that helps keep them together
usually maybe 13000 pound coils, so two chains and two straps over the top, and supposed to use our heavier chains

I do this for all shot guns. 2 horseshoe, and 4 X. 2-4 straps over. Gone across and pulled out back on ALL NC SCALES having it looked at, not a problem.

Sorry, we were just using chains in practice on dummy coils. On a real coil we would use a strap across the top. I just had chains on the brain and that is what came out.

Yeah we were taught to belly wrap today using steel pipe. Seems like just plain lazyness.
