I am only on my second day of training and I'm getting frustrated and I'm trying to remain calm and get this double clutching down packed, but I keep screwing up and I'm losing my confidence. The school I am attending does not have a driver simulator they threw us right in the truck and told us to get to it.

I am not sure if it's me or the truck, but shifting the gears is no easy task I have to fight with the shifter to move it from 3 to 4 and when I go 4 to 5 I tend to not keep pressing to the right so sometimes it jumps back to 3.

If you guys can provide any tips or advice that would be great.

    Thanks in advance!!

what rpm are you shifting at? And what type of transmission and engine we talking about?

Shift forward and to the right with you palm, back with two fingers and thumb. I heard a good analogy about clutching. Just as you throw a jab while boxing, you jab the clutch, instead of pushing it. RPM's are critical as well.

watch some youtube videos to get the hang of it.

know the shift pattern by heart.

if you wait too long to shift, it will be difficult to catch the next gear

double clutching is a three step movement:

clutch in, move lever to neutral
    clutch out
clutch in, grab the next gear

Getting in the truck with it not running can help as well. Mimic engine sounds with your mouth and try getting the timing down. It works, thats out I learned along with watching boobtube videos.

If trying it with the truck not running you might not be able to get it in some gears, but just pretend it is.

    Good luck

No training like the real thing! The simulators are decent for practice, but inside the truck is where everything has to come together with the sites, sounds, feels and movement of the real world.

Know the pattern! if the instructors or school will let you, sit in the truck and run through the pattern until you have a good idea where the gears are.

Know that you have to tap the clutch. Think of the clutch as a hot iron.. that kind of hot! You are only tapping the clutch to break torque for a fraction of a second! To do this you need to "hang the leg".. you are "stabbing at the clutch" from the hip with your toe if that makes any sense.

Wear light shoes! Heavy boots are great and even a requirement for some jobs. Learning to double clutch with heavy boots on is like trying to pick your nose with boxing gloves on!!

When your hand moves the shifter, the leg moves at the same time..

Recite (out loud helps!!) Tap - Neutral - tap - shift... kind of like a mantra..

know that the lower the gears the quicker the shifts have to be done.. the shift from 3rd to 4th are really quick.

RPMS higher than you need in the lower few gears is your enemy! Use gears to get speed.. NOT the accelerator! keep the RPM's as low as possible.

This will fall into place for you, you just need to try and relax, observe, and BREATHE... This isn't hard, this is just NEW to you.

I have only been driving for a few months and I had a hell of a time learning to shift you just need seat time and one day it will just all come together one thing that helped me was up shift at around 15 and down shift around 10 but give it some gas on the down shift right after you get it in neutral. Don't get discouraged and stay calm I noticed once I got used to being in a big truck my shifting became easier dont give up and good luck brother.
