That is one reason why larger carriers are sometimes more desirable.
KLLM has a dedicated hazmat number that we call when loaded. We read the shipping contents, type and container class and they verify the placards needed. To cover their as as, well as the driver's.

No, that placard is not legal at all. If its nonbulk you dont need the un # on the placard, but can have it if want to. I actually asked the hazmat lady in the dispatch room today of this. We do alot of hazmat so most of our trailer have one or two standard flips, one or two flips with number flips and one or two holders for the paper/plastic placards. If you are hauling two bulk products of the same class, ie. 2 corrosives you need 2 placards with each un#. Everyone hauling hazmat should have the black and red guide (49 crf i believe) along with the 2012 erg book. We just got our 2012's today.

Refer to the regs, as you are not totally correct, either.

As to which reg?

Start with 172.301(3) and go on from there to the others that are referenced in it.
BTW, the biggest thing wrong with the placard shown by the OP is the handwritten numerals, per 172.332(1)CAXPT and double yellow Thank this. -
I am endorsed, but my training obviously wasn't what I'd like it to be (seems like I need a legal degree just to read this crap). And I will pick up the hazmat guide next truck stop. I asked for a copy at my safety dept and was told they stopped giving them out. Apparently the ERG is (legally) sufficient as long as it conforms to 172.602(a)
I have seen placards like these in the past & specifically looked for them at the 3 nearby truck stops (& called 6 others) but they all just had the solid color placards. Regardless, I haven't taken calligraphry and couldn't possibly hand-write numbers that meet 49 cfr 172.332 (c1) (thanks autocar)
thanks everyone, I'm learning a ton from this -
Truckstops don't carry them, there are too many different UN numbers for that to be feasible. The shipper is the one responsible for supplying them.
What we do, at LS in a pinch, is our Hazmat dept either faxes or e-mails the numbers in the proper size and font, to us or the shipper. We print them out on plain white paper, 4 copies and then fold or cut to the proper size and tape them to the proper placard with clear plastic packaging tape. This procedure is allowed by DOT. -
Ahhh, thanks autocar. I was reading the wrong section on cc link and thought that it applied to railcars only. My bad. Dy, your safety dept should give out 49cfr, id bug them about it but picking one up on your own is a good idea. I defenitly have used mine a few times. Also, some shippers will print you out a msds sheet when picking up, which also isnt a bad idea to get if you can. Hazmat isnt a bad thing as long as you have everything done right. Stay safe.
