Yeah wheathauler, teach us all about grain merchants. I've been at this long enough that you would think that I could have them figured out. Wrong !!!!

Let me know if you start hauling in/out at Farmer City. We're there all the time. They've been hauling corn out of Farmer City to Decatur all summer. Not sure if they still are, but in June they were hauling around 75K bu. out each day.

Like RW. said, its going to be darn near impossible to break into the hopper biz around home this fall. They're going to have a glut of trucks for the small crop as it is.

Dairyman - I'm down in Madison county for a few days and am jealous of how your corn looks!

I believe I'm on my third one with one grain company. The others haven't changed in probably five years or more.

Merchants are now so under the thumb of corporate that's it hard to develop a give and take relationship with them. Used to be they tried to give you a decent rate but now they blame the higher ups for the cheap rates. The new ones have no practical knowledge of trucking and just want to get grain moved as cheap as possible.

Took the truck home with me yesterday since the job today was over by my house and finally settled the question of whether I could get a truck into my driveway. It fit just fine. Then we got rained out today.

I don't think we did, I can't remember that far back! We got about a tenth early this morning. I haven't been paying attention to the radar map, have you gotten any rain down there lately?

To change the subject away from the lack of rain, check this out. I was talking with a man this morning about the joys of trucking when he whipped out a four column ledger that belonged to his grandfather. This is the original ledger, not a copy. One week in July of 1966; an example from this ledger shows that on one of his grandfathers trucks, pulling a hopper, Gross Revenue of $1063, Fuel Cost $107, Wages @ 30% of $318, Revenue Net $638 for operation funding ( truck payment, trailer payments, insurances, taxes and other ). Could this be true ? If so, What The Heck !!!!

That's what i was thinking,i always hate the ''breaking in time'' i have to go thru with the new ones. Seems like they get younger and younger too,so it takes 3 or 4 months to get them to realize what i'm willing to run for:biggrin_25513:

5 inches over the last week, and it's raining hard now. Too late for the corn i haul though, farmers are gona be chopping most of it for fodder silage, very bad pollination from what i've seen. Beans will be much better, at least from what i'm hearing. Call me when/if you get confirmation on your load back.

Got a little over 8 tenths last night, we are livin the high life! Well, not really, a crop adjuster looked at some of the corn Thursday and estimated a couple fields at 20 and 30 bu/acre. Granted, those are the 2 worst fields, but the worst is going to be pretty bad. :biggrin_2552:
