Trainers!!! How long before one should be a trainer

I couldn't blame you one bit. I would feel the same way.

I started in van, only went with a trainer for 14 days. Then got my own truck, I've had a few rough patches and learning experiences. Then switched to flatbed and was with a local trainer in chicago for 4 days. Then I was off on my own.

I know darn well I don't know jack, I've barely even scratched the surface of this industry.

If a person with 2 years driving, and now a Trainer, goes out and gets into a wreck, and takes someones life away, was he really qualified to train anyone too begin with? Sure it can happen too someone driving for 50 years, but all the drivers I know of, with 30 plus years, nothing like that ever happen too them. You just dont have 2 years driving Experience ,and qualify you to have the same Experience and someone with 20-30-40 plus years driving. TIME IS EARNED, NOT GIVEN. I say it again, TIME IS EARNED NOT GIVEN.

 

The majority of accidents are attributed to drivers with 9-17 months experience. Just about the time the average newbie gets over confident and lackadaisical!

Now those are the accidents when the driver is legitimately at fault, not just involved in.

 

I completely understand what you are putting across. But you need to keep in mind...most of the "training" curriculum is about the company use of computer in the truck, getting experience (with supervision) in a variety of dock scenarios, and actually, someone beside you that has "some" experience and a cheerleader so to speak.

 

I dont know what to say about this Thread, Gets me all wound up. You guys and gals can reply anyway you feel, I wont take it personal. Its just a discussion on trucking. I sometimes used to stand around with some drivers and sit at a table waiting in a break room, and would talk about this, just like I did. If you dont take pride in something you tried to be the best at your whole life, then It is a waste of time.

 

All a matter of availability. How many drivers that have been on the road for twenty plus years are still driving, and how many would be willing to train new drivers?

 

I ran out of patience about 7 years ago!

It didn't help as the kids coming out of school(s) were getting dumber and dumber. When they put a student on my truck who had never even driven anything bigger than a go-cart, and the CDL was his first license.....that was it!!!

And I can remember 5 in all with me....that didn't even know that North was the top of the map! Great example of "public education"!!!!
