    Switching gears here.
Got my final settlement encompassing everything. It turned out to be about $400 more than I was expecting. Still a lot of things to comb thru, but I gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised.
Took 3 weeks from the time I turned in the truck for everything, so it was reasonable in speed as well.
(we're told it could take up to 30 days for a final settlement)

Have a frozen load heading to Albertsons in Portland. Then a couple days off, and back to work.
We'll see if Randall will send me a new student or if I have to route thru Dallas to get one.

I'm about to be a trainee (I'm out of Houston) and will be getting assigned in a week and a half. Do they tend to match you up with a certain kind of person or "just draw names out of a hat?" Do they put smokers with smokers? I assume you've been with a lot of new people. What percentage are good and what percentage do you wish would just go away and die? Anything else you can tell me?

Randall is good about trying to match people. The single largest defining criteria is smokers/non smokers. Each week it seems to flip. One week we have more non smoking trainers available than non smoking students, the next week there's a line of non smoking students waiting for a trainer.
He tries to match ages when possible. I'm in my 50's and usually get students over 40, but not always.
Good vs bad students? Never really kept track. I do my best with each one. Some do well, some don't. Usually it's dependent on the student's willingness to apply themselves.
Biggest factor in new students dropping out seems to be the culture shock of trucking. While they knew they would be away from home for a long time, the reality is a face slapper for some.
And being cooped up for so many hours at a time in a tiny space, even if they're alone, is beyond what they were expecting.
Someone said to live in your closet for a weekend to get a hint of the lifestyle. That's a good analogy.
Now to make it even more accurate, make sure the bathroom is at least 50 yards away from the closet!

Thanks SCT. Good info. Good luck with your next trainee, whoever it is. If you're a non-smoker, it might be me. I'm even older than you!

Did they clean out your maintenance account?

Maybe I will get mine next week, and report on the difference if any.

Stuck in the California 'shuffle' huh?? When hubby was solo it used to take about 3 weeks to break the cycle.
