Greetings all!
My wife is in the process of getting a job in Anchorage, Alaska. We live in Minneapolis so it looks like a move is on our horizon and to be honest we're excited for the adventure. I've always been a do-it yourselfer whether it's vehicle repairs, moving, remodeling, etc. My family friends are always asking me, why didn't you just pay someone to do that? The answer is I want to learn how it works and to challenge myself. We've got a home full of stuff and pets that I'd prefer not to fly with. I had this crazy idea the other day that maybe I should get my CDL, rent or purchase a used tractor-trailer and drive it up to Alaska with our belongings. I know it's a way bigger hassle and probably more expensive than paying to have our stuff shipped, but again it's about the adventure, the experience and the learning. Am I crazy for considering this? What do the professionals think? Is it doable?

It's doable but your are going to pay way too much for this adventure!! The cheapest I've seen a tractor go for is around $13,000. with 750,000 miles on it!! You still have to get a trailer!! They are not cheap either!! Then what are you going to do with the rig after you purchase it?? Ice Road Trucking?? According to Dave Redman, IRT is fake as hell!! Go to his youtube channel extremetruckerdave and see his videos!! I think you are better off getting a shipper to move your belongings!! Alaska isn't cheap, so save your money!! Just my .02....

Yea, I get that purchasing the equipment isn't cheap, but I'm hoping I could sell it for close to what I paid for it once I get up there. I actually work in technology so I have no desire to be an ice road trucker.

Sure, buy a truck and haul your stuff up there. What could possibly be so hard about driving a truck?
This kind of nonsense is what the general public thinks we do. So simple anyone can do it.
