I will be getting my CDL soon and was wondering what drivers (especially OTR) drivers do for vacations away from home. If you are down for a day or so by some cool sights, how do you get around? Is there anyway to explore? Do you need a rental car or a cab or can you drive your truck to a place to visit. Would be happy to find out!

    Thanks!

All depends. Depends on where you are, how far you are from the sights, how much time (to yourself) you have, and if you can find a location to park your truck where it is reasonably safe. Some company policies are loose enough to allow you to drop your trailer and bobtail somewhere close, but if you're talking about a whole day or weekend or somewhere a good distance away, a cab or rental is prudent. Rental cars are ideal if there is a major airport nearby. Some smaller rental car offices close at noon on Saturday and don't reopen until Monday morning, so keep that in mind. Cab rides are a sensible mode of transportation in some cases. Also, make use of hotel shuttle service and commuter shuttles in some cases.

A friend dropped his trailer and went to Walmart on his 34 hour break and received a log violation.

The company has a policy of no personal use.

I will absolutely refuse to work for a company that does not allow [reasonable] personal use of the tractor, especially stuck somewhere isolated on a restart.

Going that way as in no personal use? Hmmmm. It is just odd that there is such a need for drivers and the turnaround is so high, you would think that employers would try and soften the blow of being away from a vehicle for reasonable use.

Companies spend so much money on medical plans and so on, but when it comes to simple common sense things, they make policies that cause life to be so much harder and will spend 100 times the amount in turnaround instead. Not to mention your workforce is younger and less trained. You would think they would have better pet policies to combat loneliness and easier access to be able to have down time (like reasonable truck use during down time) and the ability to eat better by going to get groceries rather than fast food.. A healthier, happier workforce is a invaluable.

My truck sometimes has been known to develop mechanical problems. Like near Mammoth Cave in Kentucky or Niagara Falls. I actually told my dispatcher that my modavator broke near Gettysburg. It can be done. Just don't abuse it. Plan ahead for breakdowns.

I just got home from a week in Puntacana, Dominican Republic. I flew./bragpost

As for when I'm on the road, I'll use the personal conveyance option to go get something to eat and whatnot. I try to be reasonable though. We can use p.c. for up to 50 miles or 1 hour every day or something along those lines. It may only be 1/2 hr. I've never received a violation for using it, and doubt I ever would unless it was some obscene amount of distance I drove and/or I didn't return to where I started from.
