Starting out they make us do elogs and paper logs with our trainers and for the first month of solo. That way we know how to use both. We keep paper logs handy because my e logs go down all the time.

Everyone has an opinion but having known how to do a log book since 1971 I do not need any electric box telling me what I can of cannot do, Anyone with half a mind can do paper logs just as easy.

I have used electric logs, long before the qualcom they had paper disk inserted in trucks for logs. Also they had a card that looked like a credit card you placed in a reader attached to the truck, that was before electric controls on diesel engines.

Ran them all and they still screwed up more than my paper logs ever did.

Look guys not looking to have an argument here. My driver's daily log software on the laptop is not an EOBR, not anywhere near that, it is "loose leaf" on a laptop is all. I don't need practice doing 3rd grade math and I can almost guarantee I spend about a quarter of the time doing my logs on a laptop as I did with paper. And likely save that much time versus any one of you doing paper. But I'm sure you guys never tore a page out and re-did a major screw up or downright sloppiness right? I could teach any one of you skeptics who's never used the software and when you did figure it out you'd realise pretty quick how inefficient paper is.

30 years in the seat, and you're only netting just over $70k? Something doesn't add up here...

I agree with most, When i started driving the only thing that was air ride was the air in the tires, the set was even hard bolted to the floor, but this elog crap has to go, I've been on this now for about 4 months, and there has been several times, my clock ran out at the shipper/reciever, I refuse to stay at the shipper, this is a personal feeling, But I will drive to a place where I can get a shower, food, and restroom, It will fall under the same category of, if your put OOS, DOT must allow you to get to the nearest place where you can get, food, shower, restroom, Unless shippers/reciever have this stuff on site?, Im leaving reguards wha that computer says, I know alot of you drivers use your truck just like a tolet, urinate and/or deficate in your trucks, But I will never do that, totally discusting

    You are so right.

I can get done with the daily paperwork on a computer in about 1/4 the time compared to doing it with stick and paper.

And once you tear up a papersheet and toss it in the circular file 1200 miles ago, it's gone.

There are things I look at in favor of EOBR's.

The biggest, the piece of mind I can actually take on a speeding ticket and KNOW I will win fighting it before I even have to schedule a court date. I already did it as a result of EOBR's.

The speed at which one can complete the daily paperwork is a side benefit.

    The neutral advantages:
Your every move is tracked. It's neutral because it can be used against you and for you.

    The disadvantages:
Government intrusion further into every point of your life.

Now since DDL and Eclipse and other logging software isn't considered an EOBR. Something to consider on it. I don't really care if you want to say I am a doom sayer or what. The reality is, it could happen.

I have a lot of my business on my laptop. I also back-up my data in several locations both local to me and in the cloud.

If you maintain your log on that same computer, be prepared to be forced to surrender your computer for forensic evidence.

The other day, I was searching for diagnostic codes for my DD Series 60. Imagine my surprise when I found this training document for the WI State patrol on how to forensically secure your vehicle in the event of an accident.
    http://www.harristechnical.com/downloads/ECM_Field_Guide.pdf

If they do that to your vehicle, imagine how quick they will secure your laptop as well for your logbook in the same event.

I have run EOBR with qualcomm set-up and I have run paper. EOBR is nice. You can easily turn any mile you have to but you had best not get hosed on your detention time and even with the best of planning, that can and does happen. I have gone into a shipper/consignee thinking it's gonna be 3 hours not to leave for 8-10. Used properly, you can save your 70 hour clock quite nicely with this device.

Paper has always been fudged to some degree. It's one of it's most major advantages. You can make it work for whatever you did that day. Lot of truth to that saying that it's a comic book. You can leisurely go about your day and you don't need to worry about a nanny box screaming at you if you go over by 20 minutes to make your destination because you overslept on a 2 hour nap in the afternoon.

In the end, it's really about control and who's going to have it. The driver or the powers that be.

Please show in the regs where it says HOS of service must let you get to a place where you can shower, food and restroom?

The only allowance for going over for HOS either the 11 or 70 hours is for emergencies or weather. Your stuck if it's because of detention.
