Radio Shack CB's are fine. Have it peaked a little, put a good quality mic on it and smile all the way to the bank.
sb677 and cadillacdude1975 Thank this. -

The Radio Shack cb radio may last a long time. I have two from the 80's that I use every day. One in my big truck, and one in my car.

you can have a radio like my galaxy 99, and have more channels than dish TV. the difference in my expensive radio and your small one isnt much. truckers (the ones who still use the CB) still talk on channel 19. that channel is no more different on a $300 radio than a $39 radio. unless you get a good deal from another driver or just spend the bucks, it really doesnt matter.
the cb is almost useless these days, with cell phones and such. it is more of a hassle trying to get another driver on the radio. i just sit and listen. that is about all you can do these days. it is amazing how many are on the radio when you run across a wreck that has traffic delayed, or in the truck stops at night. they just dont use them on the road anymore. XM radio and cell phones are the cause of all that.Channel Jumper Thanks this. -
If anyone is considering purchasing a new CB radio, check out the T/A truckstops. They have a Cobra 29, I think it is the LTD or classic model, for sale with a $20 mail-in rebate. Final cost is $80. This is for August and September of 2012.

If the Rat Shack radio is working for you, then by all means run it. No need to buy a new radio if not needed. Cadillac dude is about on....for the most part a radio is a radio, some do hear better than others, some of the more expensive ones have all the bells and whistles for the super trucker. But at the end of the day, it's job is to send out a signal and pick one up.
I happen to have an old Royce 23 channel from 1976 that was one of a few radios given to me for free over the course of this weekend. Most truckers would probably write it off as not being able to be on par with something like a General Lee or a Galaxy. Fact is I'll bet you it could hold it's own against either. It doesn't have the roger beep, dual finals, echo or big Betty boob knobs and it's short 17 channels of a typical modern day CB....but it does have gyro lock, a nice woodgrain face and what seems like a robust chassis.
p.s. I also happen to have a few Rat Shack radios in my collection...one of them a 40 ch SSB rig I paid $10 for at a hamfest, then found it wasn't working right...replaced a bad $2 zener diode and all is good again. Less than $15 invested, for a 40 channel sideband rig. Now how often does that happen? -
Turbo T your sig made me laugh my ### off. pretty darn funny.

The old saying about if it ain't broke, don't fix it, applies here. Why in the world would you want to throw money away on something if what you have already works? That attitude is one that will serve you well all your life, if you can just develop it.
We waste so much money it is pitiful by throwing out perfectly good older stuff to buy NEW just because we want NEW. . .
FWIW though, I don't believe I would buy ANYTHING from Radio Shack anymore. But that may just be because of my experiences with the local stores here. Four, (well now three,) owned by the same senile old goat, and they just don't have anything I want.
Sort of long for the days somebody could go to Radio Shack and actually get something for a RADIO. . .
