I'm looking for a local driving job in the Roanoke, VA area that allows me to be home daily, but I'd like to do this as an owner. I'm open to the idea of working for someone else, but I'd much rather work for myself or as a contract driver because of the overly complicated job application process.

I'm unfamiliar with how/where I would look to be able to do such a thing self employed, but I'm not limiting myself to any one type of truck/vehicle. I'm 100% willing to drive just about anything, cargo, strait, tractor, flatbed, doubles, tankers, pick up, etc. I just don't necessarily have experience in all of those industries.

Regardless, there has to be plenty of local business in my area, I just have no idea how to find it! Cargo vans are moving things all around the city, in and out all the time! Strait trucks/tractors tankers come in and out! Across the wide range of different types of transportation, the business is DEFINITELY there. I just need to figure out how to wedge myself in there as a reliable transportation service provider.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks! :D

better read up on regulations, I agree with you but the fact of the matter is most of those will apply to the operation in one way or another ..... if you can find the business

what we have found, believe it or not, is writing letters directly using a rubber-stamp for return address and doing the letter yourself is the most effective way to find work that anyone ever came up with ~ be prepared for most of them to go in the trash and get realistic about how much stamps cost but I did a $790 mailing using a commercial mailing house ~ did not get enough work to justify the effort but when I ran copies at grocery store with a direct, up-front honesty claiming customer would not have to pay if I could not do what I said the I got about three per thousand going to a check in the bank

for commercial, if you get one in ten-thousand sitting at closing table seriously considering the buy decision with able to pay then you did a good mailing .....

    Soundfx4 Thanks this.

Thanks much, that's a good start to get me going ^-^ Someone actually suggested local courier to me? This intrigues me. I've been very happy with the fewer regulations and easier maneuverability of driving a strait truck but I understand that cargo vans are not regulated on HoS, don't have to pull into any weigh stations, and fit everywhere that most cars do and get amazing fuel economy (sprinter diesel trucks in particular). Really I'll be willing to look at anything that keeps me local, but I'm very interested in the smaller cargo vans for sure.
