It's time to get an new GPS, and I figure since I'm "in the market", I may as well go with a truck specific unit. Thing is, presently I'm used to the Garmin line of products. What I'm wondering, and I know there are other topics covering this, but they are a bit old, is...which one is better/best. Rand McNally or the Garmin? PC Miler?
What I'm looking at are one of the 5" screen versions. If I'm going to shell out serious coin on one, I want the best one available.

I use the 710 but the replaced it with 720. I like it. It's a 7 inch screen. They have 5 inch as well

Hey Voyager,
Just wondering why you will only go for the 5" screen? I recently purchased the Rand McNally TND 720 with the 7" screen. I would recommend this unit on the condition that you have the abilty to update it through a laptop or some other device. It seems right out of the box an update is necessary. Hope this helps a little. -
i have the Rand 510, and i like the 5" screen. i have no need for the 7".

PC miler was terrible. It burnt in my truck so I will have to replace it, I will prob go with the Garmin or Rand unit. Have friends with both and they like them.

I've been using an old Garmin Nuvi 350 for a few years now. It's not a large screen so it's not in my way, obstructing my view or obtrusive. In fact, it's a little 3.25" old version that just happens to have 'Truck' as one of the choices (along with bus, bicycle, pedestrian and others).
Here's what it has that I haven't found in ANY of the others. An SD Card slot that lets me put enough music on it that I can't hear the same song twice in a cross country trip (using an 8 gigabyte card). I plug the unit into my stereo using a phone jack and, while driving and enjoying some choice sounds, it will interrupt the music to let me know .8 miles from my turn that it's coming up (plenty of time, actually).
Another feature I like about it is that I can add a single waypoint along the way... say, a truck stop (it will find them for you).
Here's the only thing(s), it doesn't do (and for about $50 on ebay, I can live with it). It isn't 100% positive on weight limitations (but 99% of the time, I'd say it is). It's not hard to 'detour' if you see a restriction that includes you.
Note: I have NEVER gotten (knock on wood) any fine for weight violation or gotten directed to anyplace that a truck couldn't navigate safely with this little unit.
Recently, in fact, I bought myself another one... just in case the one I have ever takes a dump.
We're talking $50, folks,... including shipping for a unit that does what the $300 units are offering. I know (cause I drive) that we aren't made of money. Common sense dictates awareness when driving so, simply put, pay attention, have maps as a back up, plan your routes accordingly and drive sensibly. The GPS is a great technological device and can make your route planning simpler but don't base your driving record on it. Sunspot activity will throw a GPS into psychotrauma... it will, for the duration of the activity, go haywire (seen it, been there, own the t-shirt). -
so a garmin nuvi 350?

I have a rand 710 and 510 which are virtually identical other than screen size. I have been eyeing up the 720 but right now funds do not allow for the purchase. Check the rand website for a full feature list as I do not have the urge to type it all out, but it's a lot. I want the 720 for the real time weather maps and miles/fuel tracking for ifta. The less paperwork I have to futz with on the road the better.
CAXPT Thanks this.
