Well, you need to look at the entire package. No one can run for only a $1 a mile, but when you add on FSC, detention, stop pays, base plate compensation, low cost insurance, tolls being paid (no route restriction), little or no fees out of pocket (no trailer fees and other stupid Landstar kinda stuff), good load planning so you don't sit, good discounts on fuel, etc, then that $1 a mile doesn't look too bad. I netted $70K last year doing that $1 a mile thing, was by the house once or twice a week, home on weekends and holidays, and took a little over a couple of weeks off, and was not on a dedicated run. Just kept myself running within a 500-600 mile radius of the house. And that was with dry box freight. Only company fee was $10 a week for the Qualcomm (no deposit or installation fee), $.75 a swipe on the fuel card, and I opt for the prepass / easy pass transponder for about $18 a month.

You got turned down for reasons other than experience...
If you lease on, you best not find yourself in Nowhere USA where your company has no load because you cannot put another company's load on your truck so (1) you will either deadhead to the outskirts of Somewhere and end up with a cheap load or (2) you can recruit a shipper to your company, then take its load.

Personally myself and several of my friends are doing well on Schneider's percent of revenue plan. Pick your freight off their board. I'm averaging 1.65 for all miles loaded and empty.

I was on SNI choice program and did great!!!

Twistertruck, I have been getting a lot of stuff in the mail from Schneider and was wondering about them and their loadboard. Where is the bulk of their freight running to and are you competing with their company trucks?

I talked to a couple of guys at ODIA, they have their trucks signed on with Schnider. (The pumpkin) They are doing very well. Just a thought.
