My boyfriend & i faxed an application to usx today. we're wanting to team. graduated from a community college program (300+hrs), 4.0gpa, ptdi cert, defensive driving course, smith system. drove for an otr refer co for 5 wks. very short runs & alot of waiting. trying to do our homework a little better and chose a company thats right for us. i hear usx has a good team program. have a few questions.
1...where would orientation likely be out of NC?
2...team miles?
3...training length? female trainers? training pay?
4...team length of haul?
5...otr vs hometime?
6...equiment...shape, how old, stick or auto, apu's etc?
7...401k match, vacation?
sorry for so many questions, just wanted to hear it from you usx drivers.
thank you!

Ok let me take a crack at these questions lol. But I will say that you should follow a few threads on here and you will get alot of insight by just reading along. And will get some laughs as well if you read any of Wedge's posts lol.
1. Most likely Tunnel Hill, GA will be your orientation terminal.
2. Teams are said to "average" 5000 miles a week. Though it can be more or less. Sometimes you have bad weeks and nothing goes right and sometimes you get a bad FM but most teams can make good miles week in and week out.
3. Training length will be around 3 weeks. Maybe a little more depending on if your trainer has home time or other things slow you down. There are female trainers but I've heard there's a shortage of them and could sit and wait on one for awhile but thats something a recruiter or even ppl at orientation will be able to tell you. Training pay is $58 a day that your on your trainers truck. If your trainer has home time and you have to stay in a hotel you will still get $58 a day for that also.
4. Length of haul will vary greatly. I'm running team right now and we've had 300 to 2300 mile loads. I read that you ran reefer before. USX has a reefer division that you should try to get on. They are all team I believe and seem to run the longest mile loads and get high miles steadily each week.
5. I'm guessing your asking how long do you stay out for home time? For every 7 days you get 1 day off. So 2 weeks out, 2 days home. 4 weeks out, 4 days home. You can stay out as long as you'd like as well. They require at least 7 days notice for home time but prefer 10 days. My advice is to put in for home time the same week you come back from home time. That way your FM can't ever say you didn't give enough time and you can argue they had PLENTY of time to sit at their ccomputer and read your home time request.
6. Trucks are Freightliners, Pete's and international pro stars. You shouldn't get anything older than a 2010 at most. Will 98% of the time be a stick. Autos are being sold and leased off. Going to full stick fleet. No APUs as of right now. But I've heard there is talk of them possibly but I wouldn't hold your breath. They take pretty good care of their trucks. So they are all in good shape. Alot better than alot of other companies I've seen out there! I suggest when you do get your own truck to look it over VERY carefully and any problems get fixed right away because the shops at the terminals are always busy and are notorious for taking a long time to do even the most minor repairs. Avoid going into the shop as much as possible. Better to sit and wait before you even get rolling then to come back in a week and sit.
7. This is where I'm going to say..don't quote me lol. I believe they match up to a certain point but I don't remember if that's right or what that number might be. Vacation time I also can't remember the policy on that as well. There's some members on here who have been with the company longer who would most likely know the answers to that. I'm trying to think back to what they said in orientation but they cram alot of into those 3 days it's hard to remember everything.
I hope I answered at least most your questions and helped ya out a bit. Like I said in the beginning you can learn alot about the company from reading some other threads on here and following along. Good luck to you and drive safe! -
Thanks adkhunter,
i'm a little confused
. Recruiter sarah called, she recieved our application, looks good..she wants to set us up for tunnel hill.
I was asking her if the reefer division paid .48cpm like hazmat loads and she replyed that they dont pull any reefers???
I was sure after reading thru the forums last night that they do indeed have reefers...what gives??
Thanks! -
Yeah your talked to a recruiter who doesn't know much apparently because we do pull reefer. Not alot of it but we have them. I would try talking to a different recruiter maybe. But I think they do pay the same I believe. I think the only way to get on the reefer unit is to ask for it once your in your own truck. The guy I'm teamed with right now is actually going to be teaming with another guy soon on the reefer unit. And I've seen plenty of USX reefer trailers around when looking for a empty and they are like precious gold cause unless you a reefer team you ain't touching those things lol.

I graduate from a refresher course been driving for about 3 years been off the road for four so be and a buddy going to team us express said that they will hire me with my 15 over speeding however 8 weeks seams like a long time for training that is ridiculous. We are going with another company that has a shorter training period we can get the same money else driving for the great orange pumpkin seams like a better choice
-
If you going to team with a buddy why do you care about the 8 weeks of team training?? You will be with your buddy anyways so what's the difference? Id rather team for 8 weeks even if I was going solo than drive 95% of the pumpkins junk trucks...
-
I don't think that it's with your team partner you have to team with one of there drivers for 8 weeks but I may be wrong I will double check
-
I drive for USX and I'm here to tell ya that you CAN team with your buddy. They don't make you teamworh a stranger if your already planning on teaming with a friend. They prefer you come as a pre made team. Anyone who works for USX will tell you the exact same
robthomas Thanks this. -
Thanks for the info, recruiter told us that after our 120hrs behind the wheel training with a certified trainer we would finish our 8 wks training together as a team (they call it a transition period) however at a lower pay scale.
robthomas Thanks this. -
Adkhunter, lilinjun Oh ok thank you now that is better now that puts things in a different perspective, Do they make you get your hazmat the recruiter told us that we have to have it
