i like what i'm reading. would like to ask if the home time policy is true to what they say. and do they like teams or do they like the solos beter?
-
They use to pay for the hotel ... not sure when they changed the policy but they no longer pay for it. They pay for it "upfront" for you if you elect to do that and than just take 10 bucks a week out of your check to pay it back, with no interest applied to it. In the grand scheme of things that 10 bucks really won't be noticable on your check so it was a minor thing to me when deciding to go with Millis.
This last week I was talking with and met the recruiters in BRF's and without giving out any information that would be beyond what I should say, they do seem to have a very high priority on work history when selecting potential employees, they seem to be VERY selective, they are not running hundreds of students through their program a month like the other big fish companies out there. They seem to be more focused on finding an ideal candiate and focusing on retaining them. That's the jist of what I got anyway. I have no idea what criteria they go off of though so don't hesitate to apply if that's what you want to do. -
I am still in training but EVERY single driver I have talked to has said they will do there very best to get you home when you ask for hometime. Of course going into trucking you have to realize there will be things that happen out there that are out of there control and yours and you will have to suck it up. But drivers have told me they almost have always got home within a day of the requested time and mostly right on time. If your truck breaks down, or a receiver takes a day to unload you that is out of your's and Millis' control. Than there is how the freight lines are currently flowing etc.... they are not going to bobtail you home 500 miles to get you home on time ( I doubt ) anyway, as there probably not a company out there that would do that. If you go into it knowing that this isn't a 9-5 job and things are gonna be constantly changing you realize you will need to adjust you will do fine. But like I said everyone I've talked to have said alot of good things about the company including getting home. Most seem to put their requested hometime in the first day they come back out. So let's say you want to run your 14 days than take your 3 days off, best to put it in on day 1 so they can plan the best possible outcome for you. I will say I think you are expected for the most part to stay out at least 14 days unless regional or dedicated. Just ask the recruiters they are pretty darn straight forward from my experience so far.
Millis does not run teams or owner/op's. Everyone is a solo company driver with the exception of just a couple O/O's and I heard one husband wife team and how or why that is I don't know. Only time you would team is after you get your cdl and out with your trainer for the 5-8 weeks of on the road training with your trainer. And I believe that is decided and how you want to do that with your trainer.tna Thanks this. -
My application was accepted at Millis Transfer and I start October 1st in Trenton, OH. Does this mean as long as I pass the training I will have a job with them. The reason I ask is sometimes companies bring you to their site to do more screening/background checks etc.. I don't want to quit my job, drive 10 hours to training and find out I have something on my record that prevents me from working there. I do know they verified past employment. Did they do everything else? Thanks.

Long as the information you are required to provide up front is accurate there should be no problem.

They've already ran your MVR and past employment if the accepted your application. You will need to supply a DOT Cert card and Long form prior to starting training as well. You are not guarantee'd a job until you complete and pass the 3 week training program. The next week after completing the 3 weeks and passing is Orientation week ( Mon-Wed.) where you are very first thing given a drug/alcohol test which you must pass than are officially hired on and go through a few days of company policy etc and given your on the road trainer that you will be with for 5-8 weeks. You will obtain your actual CDL license at some point with your on the road trainer and you will also need to test out with a Millis instructor as well before being issued your own truck. This is a pretty much how it will go, so there really are only 3 things you need to be sure about if you are uneasy about quitting your job and going through the training. 1) DOT physical ( If not already done ) 2) Passing the 3 week training, you learn the very basics so nothing to worry about if you have a solid base of operating any vehicle safely ( In my opionion anyway ) 3) Passing the drug/alcohol test. Hope this helps ya out.
I had the same worries as yourself before putting in my notice at what is now my past employer. Just have to make sure this is what you really want to do and go into the training telling yourself you are doing this! -
Been Reading the post you guys have been writing and I two am considering MTI. I have a question that i hope someone anyone can answer and that is being that i already have my cdl's and all my endorsements would it be a requirement for me to go through the whole three week training program or would they send me through a refresher course?
-
Depends on recent experience. I got off the truck 3 years ago and I am restarting. Millis requires me to go thru school and on road training to refamiliarize. If you have 1 year recent experience then probably no.

Millis Transfer only hires drivers who have gone through their schooling; Or so the recruiter told me on the phone last week.
However, it's best to contact them directly and ask. I spoke w/ 2 different recruiters within 1 week and was told 2 different things regarding their automatic trucks.
First recruiter said they had a few automatics, and the other recruiters said no. Kind of strange..
So, MIT drivers/students, do they? Or do they not have automatic trucks?tna Thanks this.
