There are a couple guys here in NW Ohio pulling in the high side. They really wind them up and get some pretty impressive speed built when they pull the newer "drag race" sleds. I'm guessing I will be in the same boat you are with needing just a tad more to actually pull in the high side.

Pulling is all about speed. Especially with all the newer sleds. They're a lot of fun to pull and put on a good shoW. They're set up to let you get some serious ground speed then slam you at the end. This keeps a lot of classes within a few feet even if there is a big power spread.

There's times its better to take the big gear and snuff it out at the end rather than bounce off the rev limiter.

The first 100-150' you get it easy, the weight just starts to go over the fulcrum at that point. The more speed you get when the weight is on wheels the further you can go if you've got the power to drag it. Once those grousers are tripped your gonna be slammed hard and what you may have lost by spinning out in the low gear you could make up for in momentum in the high gear even though you may just choke out.

When you get into the bigger classes of tractors and such its all friction drive. The cut tires we run look like they'd get no traction but its all bases on friction. Bigger tractors are spinning well over 100mph wheel speed and that friction is helpjng send them down the track at 50mph. If you stand at the line when they take off you'll feel and hear the tire whine.

Just gotta try and and see how it goes. Can't be scared of the big gear.

I've tried the big gear empty and its real tough gettin it to come outa the hole without boggin. If I slip the clutch real hard it will smoke the drives hard on pavement. Im afraid with the weight of the sled It"ll never spool.

Nope last night I was having a few beers at the Pilot truckstop in Pittston, PA after making some deliveries...I was the nice guy sitting in my lawn chair waving at people as they passed on I-81. LOL The next (and last pull) I will be at is in Wapokenta, OH on the 24th or 25th. I've decided that I need to stop trying to run with the bigger trucks at the pulls and work the truck daily. My ride is gonna stay as is, but only be a work horse. My wife gave me the okay to build a SMFWD (Super Modified Four Wheel Drive) for the OSTPA circuit once our house is finished next fall.

I love the speed sleds and they are real good at keeping the pulls consitant/entertaining. However some sled operators (Singer's out of Greenville, OH) are known for slammiing all the weight and putting the kick stand up at the same time. This is okay for purpose built trucks, but for us OTR trucks it is way to much of a bind. I have actually dropped out of a couple pulls after they did this to the first 3-4 trucks. The best operator I have pulled would be the Mighty Mac out of West Salem, OH. The next best are Bauer's, Lowery's, and Stimmel's.

Heres a video from my very first time pulling a sled today. This is the truck I work everyday with a DDEC5 EGR and VNT delete.

Started of in 4th (13spd) and had a wheel speed of 25mph the whole way down the track at 2700rpm. I don't know what I would do to make it pull better next time. Traction is obviously a big issue but everyone says you need wheel speed so im a little confused. It would probably be too much to go into 5th (1st gear high range) would it not? Truck has 11R 22.5s with 3.70's.

All in all I had fun and came out with a 3rd place getting bumped out of second by literally 1 foot.
