When you apply for a company and you have to go through the four weeks of driving with a trainier where do you sleep. I know most trucks have one bed so where does the newbie sleep.

Training trucks are double bunked condos. One bunk over the other. When not in use, the top bunk folds up. Newbies usually get the top bunk. You can not use top bunk when truck is in motion.

Klatu is correct. When truck is in motion the student will use a sleeping bag or his own bed linen over trainer's bed linen in the lower bunk.

With CRE a trainee is a cheap team driver . The trainer is asleep while the trainee drives and the trainee sleeps while the trainer drives . Not BS. How else do CRE trainers get the 5,000 miles a week they brag about here ?

A good company will not want you sleeping while the trainer drives, and they definitley won't want the trainer sleeping while you drive. Except for maybe the last week or so of training if your doing good. I'm not saying it doesnt happen, just letting you know if the company tells you thats how it's gonna be I would look somewhere else.

Since practically every training outfit "trains" this way.. its become the industry standard.

For over a decade, I was a trainer/Mentor with Swift. We ran "half team" loads until I was comfortable with the students abilities then we ran mostly team freight. Plenty of time to teach and critique, using multiple dock actual time and experience, negotiating all the ins and outs of planning a trip, and helping to be sure the new student has a good background with as much of the lower 48 as possible.

This attitude about sitting there in the passenger seat and holding the hand of someone who should be adult enough to be able to think things out for themselves is bullcrappy! The trainer is there to teach, advise, point out the little mistakes, stop the potential big mistakes, and to be a cheer leader of sorts and to build confidence. How do you build someones confidence if you are just sitting there holding his/her hand.

You have 1 year experience, yet you make a claim as if you have a long running history of how this industry and it's techniques should be done. You certainly haven't been a trainer, not with 1 year experience, when you have amny more hours under your belt...get back to me!

For the first two weeks I drove while the trainer slept. But he made sure it was strictly highway miles.

Yes top bunk is for trainee. My trainer was awesome, he gave me half the storage space. But when my friend was with his trainer, he had to keep his three bags on the 2.5 foot wide top bunk with him while he slept!!!! Or drove, which I am pretty sure is illegal.
