I am purchasing a used truck in Kansas. i need to transport it to New jersey. is it legal to drive this truck (bob tail) to NJ with just the temporary plate issued by the dealer, or do i need to obtain the apportioned plates from my base state & IFTA Fuel tax decal before i drive this truck home.. Also any other requirements ( name on truck ,US DOT number on truck.) any advice would be great!

Yes, You must have proof of insurance but if you finace it you cant leave with the truck until you provide proof. You mudt log 7 day's off duty and sog the trip legally. You may be questioned at any scales that are open but no worries as you are in transit and bobtailing they usually don't bother.
DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
Thank you for your reply. I thought it would be OK with just the Temp Plate, but just wanted to ask before ending up with tickets & fines. you are also right about the insurance. Always need that. I will log the state mileage & report as usuall.

Just asking, but why would he need to log the trip if its not registered as a commercial vehicle? It could be that a person would by the truck for personal/private or farm use. In those cases, it would never be licensed/registered as a commercial vehicle so no log would ever be required. But again, BEFORE its ever registered (as a commercial vehicle) why would a log book be required?
And why MUST he log SEVEN days off duty?
And I am confused as how he can log seven days off duty but log the trip legally at the same time. Either he is logging the trip or he is logging off duty.
Again, just asking... -
I ran a truck and trailer from MN to FL with just the temp tags. No freight of course, that would be a big no-no. On the second truck and trailer I ran down, I already had the tags, so I slapped them on plus an IFTA sticker, a printed out piece of paper with my info and got a load home. I originally had a magnetic sign to put on with my numbers and such, which stuck just fine to my Western Star doors, but the Columbias I bought had aluminum doors.
