just want some of your opinions on the pre 2003 freightliner's, are they overrated? Are they really more reliable than the new models? I'm asking because many companies require newer trucks to lease on with them but I have been advised to stick with pre 2003 classic or Century. Thanks

Just wanting to learn I am a newbie :biggrin_25520:

Plenty of good companies will take a older truck.

There not overrated once you start dealing with all of the emissions equipment failing here and there.

Was in the shop for 36 hours a few weeks ago to a non related issue, 12 bays were full. The truck I was driving was non egr, all the others had some related egr problem.

Correction - companies with age limits are over-rated.

Then, there is the way I went.... 2013 Columbia glider with a pre-egr series 60 in it. That would negate the age thing at some of those companies, and avoid the emissions junk. Seems weird some carriers will do the age thing. If a person has a truck for a long time, usually they are taking care of it. And a shop inspection at the carrier would verify that. The age limit requirement just is a ruse. And a person could still run the other 47 contiguous states if California was an issue. If the truck looks good, and will pass the most rigid DOT inspection, who cares how old it is.

As far as reliability. The way I went says it all. I had a 2006 with an ISX, and I don't regret getting rid of it. I put on a high quality Borg Warner 171702 turbo on this new ride... cost $695 to the front door. The ISX turbo, still on the parts counter, costs over $3600. That should tell you about pre-egr vs emissions engines. The cost to maintain and run a pre-emission engine is far lower than the emission stuff. And when you add to it that I don't have a urine tank and a pipe burning furnace under my truck like the new emissions engines, cost to operate a pre-egr unit looks better all the time.

Thank you all! I will stick with a pre egr, what year was the last pre Egr manufactured? 02 or 03?
Also would you recommend the century or classic? I know comfort wise the century is a little better but what else? Aerodynamics?
