Well, I've been chasing the big money to pay off some bills, pay for a wedding, and get some money in my savings account.
My plan is to get enough saved up so that I can work less in the coming winter months, but if these rates keep up, that isn't going to happen.
In my area, this winter is going to be very bad. Lake Michigan is in the 80* range, and will not cool off enough and cause some massive lake effect snow for sure. We are already getting lake effect rain, and they doubt the lake will even freeze on the shores......
that being said, my other option is a gurranteed income, which can't be said for many other things right now. I am not making any moves, just weighing out my options. I'm no where near set enough to sit for the slow season to play out.
You say to stick with something and get good at it. I feel it is better to get good at something and then get good at something else. I have ran just about every piece of equipment I can think of (van, reefer, dump, flat, step, lowboy, tanker, hopper, dry bulk, fuel, car hauler) so that leaves me with options when things go to crap. I prefer to be a jack of all trades. If need be, i can fall back on my PACCAR training and ASE certs and go turn wrenches, or i can use my welding cert and go play pipe fitter..... i just prefer to drive. we shall see how the next few weeks fare and the markets go.
Everytime I try to stay close to home and just do short runs everyday, there are none. I can get gravy to areas, but can't find stuff back out. And I'm not talking about ND, I'm talking about STL, Cleveland, Indy, and Dubuque. Loads are close to non-existant there unless you want to go into NE, ND, and TX.
Where is everyone?

Very true, but the "slow" just seems to keep going and going... soon it is going into the "slow season" and then what??
Doesn't seem like it's going to be good for the little guys who don't have big contracts in place.Last edited: Aug 18, 2012
