Landstar Broker - non leased question

    Anyone out here not leased to Landstar yet pulls for them?
    I'm an independent and have been doing several loads for Landstar and been rather happy.
    They pay on time and the rates are decent for what I was offered.

    However, this last load I had to run on toll roads and was wondering about typical reimbursement (or not) in tolls?
    The bottom of the load confirmation sheet has conflicting statements:

    TOTAL CARRIED PAY $ xxxx.xx
    Please submit all copies of permits, lumper fees and tolls along with blah blah blah...

    ..I was wondering if it is normal to be reimbursed for tolls. My Landstar dispatcher didn't know :biggrin_2554: but told me
    to submit it and hope for the best.

    It really depends on the agent and if the negotiated contract with the customer includes tolls. When I was still leased with them I ran alot of grocery loads out of Denver pa and was always reimbursed tolls.

    Landstar doesn't pay extra for tolls, permits or lumpers unless it is specifically listed on the rate confirmation. You can submit the receipts, but I would not expect to be reimbursed unless it was agreed to when you accepted the load. As an independent carrier, you are responsible for all costs of getting the load to the consignee. When Landstar (or any other broker) sends the rate confirmation that is usually all that they will pay on the load. If you want to find out for sure you can call Landstar directly and ask them. Speak to someone in broker settlements.

    I figured as much and the rate more than covers it...so it's no big deal either way...

    They won't even pay for a scale ticket when the broker tells you that you have to have empty and heavy scale tickets

    I have YET To be offered a load from Landstar that I would consider a good rate to pull it for.

    Many do have cheap rates. Those are usually the ones who double broker. It takes time to find good agents with decent paying loads. Landstar dos have some agents that have very good rates. They will not alway put them on their loadboard. That isn't much different than any other broker.

    Agent may want tolls to get $$ from shipper. For you or maybe just for him!

    Every load I have pulled for Landstar was over $2.50/mile.
    That's without even arguing with them....nothing bad about that rate..

    Ok...Dispatcher...What I meant to say was the girl I work with in the office...she is their dispatcher but not mine.
    However, when I pull for Landstar, she is my point of contact and I need to provide her with daily updates and status. The office I deal with has their own trucks and work as a carrier/broker. I park there in their lot and they give me decent freight when I am looking for it.

    Landstar treats me well. They offer more loads than I accept and they pay within 2 days of being presented an invoice.

    I got nothing to complain about with them...better than running for some wah-hoo broker that may or may not pay me within 30 days..

    So long as they aren't offering me decent rates, the stuff isn't going onto my truck.

    I bounced 240 miles Friday to take two loads for a broker that was paying GOOD rates instead of taking a cheap load and a good paying load.

    AND I set myself up for a lot better price on the rate in the future and a "first call" when this comes up again with this broker. He didn't even hesitate this week to offer me both loads when last week I was lucky to get the first.

    It's got the potential to be 7-10 days of work each month. And I am home every night for that time period.


    You aren't driving a truck. You are selling a service and your reputation is what will get you the good rates.
