I know these questions get asked all the time but I am going to do it 1 more time! I just finished school and am having a hard time deciding on who to begin my trucking career with. I pretty much have it narrowed down to 4 companies who seem to be at the top of the list as far as reputable and treating employees decent. They are Maverick or McElroy if I go flatbed and Epes or Watkins Shepard if I go non flatbed. A little about me...34 years old, married with no kids, in pretty good shape, live near Charlotte NC. I would like to be home on the weekends at least but really have no problems being on the road during the week for a few years to get my experience. I know I can get a local job once I have some experience.I see alot of companies saying home weekends so what I was hoping for was for some drivers from each of these companies to give a some ideas of what to expect with each company....good and bad! Also, what kind of miles to expect so I can figure appr. what I would be making with each company listed. I have read ALOT on here but was just looking for some fresh answers! Thanks for all the help!

I always try and push flatbed (TMC) to those seeking home time every 7-10 days and living in prime area (such as NC), BUT only if they don't mind a little work and have a great deal of pride in their work and are motivated by challenges. I have nothing against Maverick or McElroy either, though. Epes could be a worthwhile consideration (just on my hunch as I don't have any first-hand knowledge) insofar as hometime prospect however I have a few concerns about Watkins-Shepard and hometime. Weigh all the pros, cons, maybe's, maybe not's, gut feelings, etc and follow your mind.

Epes is the way to go. Terminal in greensboro, you will be home every weekend unless you want to stay out, new and well maintained equipment, smaller company with solid frieght base, very family oriented and produced on everything they said they would. #### good money for newbies as well. they don't hire form every school and are picky about who they bring on board but if you make the cut you'll be glad you're here. of course no company is perfect and we have the occasional issue to deal with, but it is by far and away less and fewer than alot of the things other people from other companies post about on here. we get a .07 bonus to run points north of dc as well. i don't see myself going anywhere else unless some dream job falls out of the sky into my lap. if you have any specific questions about them pm me and i'll be glad to answer. my rolling average miles is 2750 +/- 200 or so and i brought home 44k first year and only goes up from there

I am in the same boat..In school now and will finish in october. I have the same list and I have decided that Epes is top on my list. I hope I make the cut and don't have to look anyone else. If I had decided to go flatbed it would have been Maverick for sure. Good luck!!!!

I drive for TMC, Have been with them since may. I live in their out 2 weeks at a time area, but was only out 1 week end in the 4 weeks I was with my trainer. Since I got my own truck the first week in June, I've been home every weekend except two. The pay is good, and the freight has always been there. Never waited long for my next load. My f/m usually had me pre-loaded before I sent in my empty. Every company is different for every person. Best thing is do your research, read the good as well as the bad. Perception is reality, and people always see things differently.

Have been with Mav. for a little over a year now love it so much that i am currently checking out other companies. they DO NOT get you home every weekend. In the months of July/Aug. I have spent 3 weekends away from home (hung out) gotten home on Sat. evening on 2 other occasions. They tell you in orientation that they try to get you home but freight dictates whether you get home or not.

True with any company. The freight and where the freight is going always dictates whether or not you get home.

Hey Auction, where do you live? I wonder if that may have something to do with you not getting home. I know I have read from several drivers lately on here that have been stuck out several weekends with Maverick. That is one of my big concerns. I know in trucking it is going to happen and I am prepared for that I just don't want to be out 2-3 weeks at a time consistantly. Everything else about them sounds pretty good!
