talked to shop said there is a roar when turning aux drive bearing, so maybe that is it.
-
Effective tool to use in the future. You'd be saving a lot of guessing about now. -
I agree will do in the future
-
But, bull gear bearings and accessory drive bearings would show up as the same material in an oil analysys.
-
Thanks stranger.. I'll use that as an excuse as why I had no oil samples

UPDATE. When I talked to shop last week & they could not identify for certain where the metal was coming from, just that the idler gear felt a lil loose. the bull gear & bearing was good he said not lose at all. well I told him to replace bull gear bearing anyway. he called me back fri, said he was finishing up, & how he was glad I told him to put bearings in regardless. the bearing RACE so pitted real bad. THAT is where the metal was coming from. he been working on trucks for over 20 years & he said he learned something. he did not think it needed changing. I know a lot of folks that take off power steering pump & put a bar to try & see if any movement in the bull gear. taking the bull gear & bearing off, is the only way to check the race behind the bearing. I an glad not only we found the culprit, but that he admitted he would not of replaced the race unless I told him & he learned somthing & did not act as if he found this out on his own, but thanked me for the the lesson he learned. a lot of shops would not do that. thats why I use him.
MNdriver Thanks this. -
GOT truck back today. again today shop owner just looked at me & said ya know if you had not insisted I change the bearing, that race, bearing would still be in there. he said bearing was smooth when turned, tight, no sign of wear. bearing still looks near perfect. he said it is a first for him. never seen one like that. I asked, he did not know what caused it. I change oil every 10,000 so I know it did not come from abuse. maybe the alloy used on those races were just weak in that area. I am glad I did not run 15,000 oil changes, mayby it would not have lasted this long. anyway I got pic's.
there were only 1 place on each race. it was almost a perfect rectangle about 3" long, the other more of a shorter rectangle at 1-1/2 long. both very deep.

Get a hold of the engine manucturer.
That's a production failure in the plating process.
I used to work in a company that did electo-plating for flexible printed circuit boards. -
are you joking? the engine was made in 94' it has over 1.4 mil miles.
