Came across a President Thomas J. Just curious if anyone had any experience with this radio and if there are any good links this model so I can learn more about it. Havent tried it out yet.

Good radio/junk? what can I expect?

    Thanks!

Same as the old President Grants, only AM, where the Grants had SSB, and I think extra channels...80's radio...

You can see videos of that radio on YouTube.

Pretty good radio, basically the same as the older Cobra 29 GTL/LTDs IIRC.

So a good, older radio.. Thanks for the replies.

What kind of tune up should I get with this radio? I am going to have the cb shop take a look at it to see how it is set up anyways.

    Thanks.

My suggestion would be to have it set to stock. That series of radios were nice performers, which I believe led to their long popularity. When they've got limiters left intact, modulation set to 100% maximum, power where it should be, receiver sensitivity checked and touched up as necessary with a measurable signal generator, you'll know you've got a good reference when you put it on the air. If you have a decent antenna that's installed correctly, and still *need* a tad more range, an external amplifier will fix that. But the idea of wringing 6 or 7 watts out of a 4-watt radio will never be heard on the air, but it will shorten the life of your classic radio. And if it's done without a spectrum analyzer, the extra power probably won't be on the channel you've got dialed up, anyway.
    Hope that helps some.

Handlebar, thank you for the post. Very informative and helpful. That is the direction I will take it. Its my first classic radio and I am looking forward to keying it up. Im sure my local shop will remember this model and take good care of it.

    Thanks again.

many of those older radios were easily modified for extra channels. most of those president radios had the 8719 pll chip in them if i remember right.
