What do truckers wear?
Well generally I like to wear clothes, but I've talked to a lady truck driver friend who said she liked the fact that no one can see you when you are bare and essential.
It was bad imagery. -
Flip flops out side the truck are a definite no-no. Many companies do have dress codes so be sure to adhere to them. Flip flops while driving is fine but if you have to get out of the truck then put on some shoes or sneakers. As for clothing be sure you get LOOSE fitting and light colored. The darker colors absorb heat and tight clothes will stick to your body faster than loose fitting clothes. I wear khaki (Dickies brand) colored long pants and (same color shorts for summer time) a pocket tee. A ball cap will come in handy to cover the bed head hair so you don't scare women and children with the wild man from Borneo look.
Long sleeves are optional but if you use a suicide knob on your steering wheel you may want to stick to short sleeves (You dont need a cuff getting caught in that ball while attempting to turn).
Other than that be aware some shippers will demand long pants and work boots to be allowed onto their property. Safety glasses and hard hats as well as respirators will usually be available at the security check point for some of the chemical companies. For Hazmat shippers; they may require a clean shaven driver as well (so in the event of a chemical emergency the respirator will be able to make a proper seal around the drivers face).
A water proof rain jacket is a good idea as is a heavier coat for freezer warehouses and winter time in the north. -
So I'm reading this thread and wondering to myself, so if this is what you guys are wearing, how come I see so many truckers who look like a cross between the Frito Bandito and Chester the Molester? You know, the guys who haven't had a hair cut or combed their hair in a month, who haven't shaved in two weeks, and are sporting a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off and greasy sweat pants and flip flops on their feet.
I wear jeans, boots, denim shirts and flannel shirts, which is what I plan to wear when driving. -
My husband's company said to make sure nothing obscene, nothing with pot leafs, porn, semi-porn, you get the idea. They said work boots were a must also. Aside from that, just be neat.
