Some truck students will find it much better to attend truck school in another state. For a variety of reasons like tuition or just better driving.
I want to do a CDL in Oregon but my License is from Montana. There is nothing illegal about that. Lots of students do schooling out of state and dont change their class C license. But some schools are saying they wont accept students without local license. I think they dont understand the law but thats what they say. Trucking schools generally dont attract Rhode scholars for managers if you know what I mean. Anyway How can I get around this??? The CDL is a federal license.
Can anyone tell me how to get thru this hurdle...???? I want to go out of state. I can do the license switch and then later switch back but that could be hundreds
of dollars.... thanks
out of state schools

Most States want you to have your license in the same State as your residence and most of the Trucking Companies will require the same....It shouldn't be a problem unless they make you pay twice....The test should be the same...And besides......The Test Is Way Easier Than Driving A Truck In The Real World...

Yes you have to have a residence in most states evn though it's managed federally it is still a state license.

what is the national average cost for CDL A course now???? AT least in the west..
-
I know that in IL you must take your CDL test in that state if you get your license out of state you will have to retake it.
Average cost for a school is $5-7k college courses seem to be less 2-3k -
In the west it is much lower as it is home to some pretty crappy schools. Range from $800 to $9,000

the rules need to change. It should be a Federal program and available anywhere you want.

I will be taking my schooling and CDL test in Indiana and I am an Ohio resident. I have to retest for an automotive license in Indiana (written only) then do the written test for the CDL temporary permit on the first or second day of school. This will cost around $60.00 in different payments for the whole process in Indiana. Later, when I test and receive my CDL in Indiana, I have to return to my home state and take their written automotive test again and have them transfer my CDL endorsement on to it. Again, another $45-50 in fees just to make it match my residence address (which I never left in the first place). Wish I could transfer the automotive back and forth without re-testing in each state but its not my decision to make. Just more studying to be sure I pass two car tests on top of my CDL.
