Go over to Cape Canaveral and see what they secure with straps.
Some pretty hi end equipment.
Just need the correct straps and the know how.
Power generation turbines of 180 000lbs that cost US$ 30 million , straps only.
Securing loads with just straps?

The lattice crane booms are made of as thin as possible tubing for weight reasons.
It is their design that that gives them strength.
With chains it is quite probable that you could put a small dent in to one of the lattice pipes rendering it out of service.
To repair on of those thin wall pipes and get it certified is a huge job and the crane could possibly be unable to work with out that section.
No one wants to take that chance. -
hauled what they call field units for G.E. and Westinghouse.
You can only run straps over these units as well and in certain places.
You can run chains on the top cradle mounts only.
These are also high dollar pieces. Plus full tarps over them after they wrap them up in shrink wrap -
