Someone explain how those sliding tarp trailer get away with being over 102" W.
They start with a 102 trailer and then add a few inches on each side.
Do chains make it a wide load?

It is considered tarp equipment...not saying it is right, but that is the interpretation.

This is the most grey area I deal with. Some cops will cite me (mobile homes) if I have a permit for 16' wide and the box is 16'0" but the 1x2 wood used to hold the plastic on the side makes it 16'1".
Some say it falls under "securement" some say you cant ever be over what you are permitted for.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves because I deal with it everyday and every judge interprates it differently. . -
No Chains and binders do NOT make an over size load. You might find a Cop or DOT man that will try and argue that point. Do what I do if I don't know the answer 100% look it up,(and print it out )for the Federal and State rules on something.Just remember what is good in one state isn't always in another. Same goes for the Feds. States can make Federal rules stricter. Better safe then Out of Service

Cause its considered removable. In the end they are 108" wide, my 96 is now 102.

When they first came out with that setup did'nt Il. raise a big stink over it and shut down some trucks at the scales over it?
-
Them and a few other states did. They was writing tickets to guys for over width. PA was real bad about it.

That's what I thought. New things make people go crazy and start looking to bust everybodies chops ove the deal.

CO is another for being very strict on the 102"...I was inside getting my paperwork checked when a flat bed rolled across, they red lighted him and ran out with their tape measure and long sticks. One was on one side and the other opposite, put their sticks up to the binders and laid the tape on the ground and under...105", shut down till the company got an over width permit and an escort to go over Vail west bound.
Back inside waiting for the driver to come in...they were laughing about how "these driver's think we don't know the rules"!
