Here's one for all of you diehard gear jammers:
What percentage of tractor-trailers on the roads today have air brakes? What percentage have hydraulic brakes? What percentage have both? I have a CDL permit test fast approaching and I would like to get a better understanding of both air and hydraulic braking.
Thanks.![]()

Thanks Bob. Hope the Florida weather doesn't slow you down lately. I hear you should avoid the Louisiana Coast tomorrow. Regardless, I do know that hydraulics are cheaper because they leak. I also know that newer trucks are built with air brakes. What percentage of trucks have both Bob?

Probly 99% of tractor trailers have air brakes, hydraulic brakes are only used on light duty single axle trucks normally. I have seen pintle hitch trailers with hydraulic surge brakes or electric. Or light duty trucks and trailer will have hyrdaulic on the truck and electric on the trailer.

I don't know of any tractor trailers with Hydraulic brakes. That's why he said what he did. Unless it's something special, all tractor trailers have air brakes, therefor, the need for an "air brake" test on your cdl.

Thanks guys. Allow me to explain: The DMV CDL manual I have lists the procedure for testing hydraulic brakes at least twice. I would guess this is in case one ends up in a light truck.
Thanks again. -

Your CDL manual contains a good amount of outdated material.
