Yeah, I'm a little confused about the hotel gripe, myself. Like, stay in a hotel at a company's expense?? What the heck is that?! I would love to be able to stay in a hotel at my company's expense for a layover - Motel 6, Super8 or what have you! I'm like most everyone else here. I get to park somewhere and stay in my sleeper for my layovers!

But as to the rest, I don't think Ruan holds any monopoly in what large, bureaucratic companies do to their drivers. Most all of them do it. They try to hang everything on you, the driver.

I can't help but wonder if a lot of this isn't motivated by companies wanting to keep their drivers. Are they messing with your record to make you a less employable prospect to other companies? One has to remember, that to many of the large companies (Schneider, J.B. Hunt, C.R. England and many others), you're little more than a body to sit at the steering wheel, not to mention a tax break. It's little more than a numbers game for them. The more trucks they have running, the more money they are making. And bureaucracies, one has to remember, especially the larger ones, are governed by the bean counters. It's the bottom line, it's statistical projections and pros and cons of company goals over the needs of drivers. It is a set of equations from which the driver loses every time.

In my experience, the happiest drivers are the ones who work for the smaller companies. I work for one such, myself. I love my job. I am paid well, and the company is understanding if needs arise. They understand what it is to be out there, and they appreciate the fact that it is you - the driver - who is making money for them.

Many of these smaller companies can be difficult to get hired on with, though. You have to have a good safety record, a willingness to work hard (as many of these smaller companies haul specialized freight that requires a lot of extra work from the driver [I haul nothing but glass]), and you have to be able to sell this willingness, and your ability as a driver to the company.

My advice is to do your best to maintain a clean safety record and start looking for jobs at smaller companies. Because anytime you work for one of these large bureaucracies, you're going to be nothing but a projection, a statistic and a number, and seldom a happy driver.

I also work for a smaller company. The pay isn't that great but I can walk into the bosses office and tell him I need the next morning/day off and I get it no questions asked or I have a dentists apt so I need to be back by 1500 and I am. That is worth a ton of money to me.

I could use more info on this company. I'm thinking about applying. I don't have issues with moderate hotel accommodation as long as there not trying to get me to sleep in a day cab.

Been with Ruan since mid-2011. It was tough at first, 3rd shift, getting all the crap loads, being lied to. Sure there are times they'll 'blame the driver'....but that's what most companies do. The driver is the expendable cog. (Which we're not). Just work the system..... or find another job if you're not happy. Im glad to say "I played their game.... and im winning". ;)

P.s.... if they tell you you MUST stay in a hotel, fine. Get it put on your comdata card and get in a 36. Either that or get in the sleeper and show 'off duty'. Work the system.
